Many of the prints I encountered in New Bedford, including this one, were printed by Charles Taber & Co., a prominent local firm at the end of the 19th century.

The problem with historical research is that one inevitably discovers many other topics that one wants to research. This happened to me in New Bedford: I fell quite in love with the works of Lemuel David Eldred (1848-1921).

Check out these Gen Z bros lighting up the Moby Dick Marathon reading at 6:10am right now in New Bedford, MA.

Most of the people who endured here in the museum up until this point are under 30 years old. Guys, the kids are all right.

An outcome of my research into the #PhilosopherShips of #StephenGirard is that I now get very excited about little chunks of wood in various museum collections. Here's an example: a piece of the ROUSSEAU at Girard College.

The whaleship Wanderer was built in 1878 by J.H. Holmes & Sons of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. Her long career crossed the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic Oceans, and spanned declining demand for whale oil and the dangers of World War I.

New Bedford artist Arthur Gordon Grinnell (1854-1924) crafted this stunning chest from wood salvaged from the whaling vessel ROUSSEAU in 1894. The wonderful object is now on display at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

I'm fascinated by the collective memory in #NewBedford and beyond surrounding the American #whaling industry, and there are many pieces of related #materialculture to scratch the itch, including this image and other relics of the wrecked whaler WANDERER.
