The sitter is Nigerian-American artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s mother, Dora N. Akunyili, pictured as a student during an early chapter in the life of a future public leader in Nigeria. Commemorative fabric made to honor her after death pulls the portrait into the present tense of grief. With a chalkboard pangram and a quick flicker of runners, learning becomes motion via repetition, discipline, and endurance. The image is a generational pledge that education can widen a girl’s horizon … and keep her hopes moving. She is a young Black girl sitting on a low step, her posture relaxed and self-possessed. She wears a cobalt-blue sleeveless dress patterned with pale floral motifs, round light blue earrings, a thin yellow necklace, and gray-blue slide sandals. Faint chalk text repeats a pangram of “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog,” like a lesson still echoing after class. This work belongs to her series “The Beautyful Ones” portraits of family, titled after Ghanaian author Ayi Kwei Armah’s 1968 “The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born” novel.
