Ed snaps back out of his imaginings when he hears Stede's quick gasp: Shane has just sucked Ilya's thumb into his mouth. Yeah, Ed can't lie: it's fucking hot. Stede gasps again when Shane drops to his knees almost immediately afterwards. "Oh. My. God," he whispers. "He's just... going for it!" Ed peeks over at him, then wishes he hadn't; Stede's eyes are huge, his lips are parted, and fuck if Ed doesn't want to crawl over and climb into his lap and kiss him so very deeply...

The sooner he realises what I am, the better!” Lucius didn’t flinch. He didn’t budge. He just looked straight into Ed’s eyes, not making a single blink. “Stede’s not him.” The smoke cleared from Ed’s eyes, but his vision was still blurry. “What?”

It’s cold outside, causing Stede and Izzy to reflexively get closer to each other as they walk through tree-lined paths, merging with a group of other guests on the way to the biggest evergreen on the property. Here, too, is seasonally decorated, with lights already in the smaller trees and wreaths attached to the signs that point their way to their destination. He sees Ed and Frenchie, maybe, and thinks: <i>if I were really in love with Izzy, what would I do?</i> And then he does it. Izzy doesn’t protest as Stede slings an arm around his shoulders, affectionate and protective all at once. Immediately he feels a little more secure, sure that they won’t lose each other in this crowd. This close, Stede can see that Izzy’s winter hat is well-loved, and he starts to imagine a side of Izzy that’s careful, gentle with his things. Maybe gentle with a lover, too. “Walk slower, I’ve got a bad leg,” Izzy says, sounding rather irate, and not careful or loving at all. Well, then.

There’s a clock inside Nana’s office and he hears every second tick, tick, tick as it goes by, amplified by the silence he has to offer her in response. Because she’s right, of course she’s right, he’s held himself like he would break for so long, that he’d forgotten to check under the bandage to see if the wounds had healed. He looks now, sees fresh, pink skin begging to see the light, feels the sting of cool air touching nerve endings. For years, Blackbeard has been the one handling this stuff for him. Like a fucking PR manager on steroids, anything he didn’t feel like dealing with, handed it to the vampire viking clown with smoke for a head and flames for eyes. Change it, he'd demand. Take it away from Eddie, who’d been through quite enough bullshit, do your little magic trick. Use the raw materials and transmute them into soft words and a communal experience, something more palatable and profitable. But what does that mean now, when he's surprised by discomfort too big to swallow in one gulp, too unexpected for him to have time to brace? What does he do now, when all he wants to do is pull the bandage back on and let someone else deal with this one? Suddenly, Ed thinks he knows why Stede ran.
