In this post I setup an OpenADR (Open Automated Demand Response) VTN from an example on Github. This will help me to explore the OpenADR protocol and how it relates to energy management.
Setting up an OpenADR VTN from example
As I was learning about Matter Device Energy Management, I came across another protocol called OpenADR. OpenADR (Open Automated Demand Response) is a protocol that enables two-way communication between those that make or distribute power and those that consume it. It's a technology that would enable your electricity provider to reach into your home. If there was surplus electricity, they could switch on some appliances.

@philiprsteele.co.uk Hi. Is there any chance that Octopus is experimenting with OpenADR at the moment?

Finally found the spec for OpenADR, a protocol the UK government is considering for communicating Grid Demand Side events. I’d love to build that into my Energy Manager prototype.

No the utility meters were not involved. We stood up an OpenADR system that broadcast the prices and collected power consumption from home batteries and EVs. We also had a bidirectional V2G charger on the program. These were billed separately from the primary meter.

@philiprsteele.co.uk Any chance you have an OpenADR or similar API for these energy saving sessions? I have a bit of tech on my desk that I’d love to try out to see what’s possible in terms of automating energy use/savings in response to these sessions. Thx

This kind of "mass distribution of an infinite-volume price list" is how all the major contenders for distributed resource control expects *much* larger fleets of assets to be controlled: #openadr #matter #eebus #energyprotocol etc etc; it's all price lists with no volumes attached

Any tips on electrical load management systems for single-family and small multi-unit buildings? I'm finding equipment with support for things like CTA-2045 and OpenADR, but nothing on coordinating demand in the building. I can't imagine the only way to electrify is with 800A service everywhere.

I'm getting royally pissed with the OpenADR alliance.

It claim to be an "Open" specification, but so far there is nothing open about it. It's all behind a signup form and payment options (to get certified, test or participate).

This is one way to get more specifications (XKCD 927).

Just for giggles (I'm retired so should know better) I ginned up a price server that gets the day ahead price from caiso. It sends via OpenADR 3.0 to a 3.0 VEN that is running on a Raspberry pi Pico W ($6). The pico serves a web page w/prices and talks to a Zigbee coordinator ($13). Cheap!
