It's hard to think about something as normal as chasing my favorite person around with a camera when my nation is going batshit crazy. Can we do three more years of this? What kind of country will we be after this Administration? Will we get to that point? We've gone all-in on the whimsical madness of a doddering old man infatuated with fantasies of his own power. Underneath him seems to be a cadre of hangers-on who all have their own pet horrors and are racing to achieve them before the whole shithouse goes up in flames. Whether WE continue it or not, we've seemingly declared war on Venezuela and our nincompoop leader literally JUST tweeted that he is now the Acting President. But there's no plan. He also threatened both Cuba and Greenland. And while some of his bootlickers try to brush it off as not-insanity....it's nuts. The news is full of "do you think he'll really do it" and the short answer is "apparently he'll do whatever the fuck he wants". Dismantling our emergency response to natural disasters and disease. Gutting our science and bending our universities to political ends. Dismissing the entire concept of international law. Might makes right and devil take the hindmost. What the actual fuck. There isn't a single member of this Administration that I would trust to pet-sit for a long weekend. And there you have Sunday.

Besides forgetting these blurs, I also almost forget how challenging it was to find new models ten years ago. At the time I didn't even realize that "art models" were a thing that existed and was inviting friends, strangers and random hookers from Craigslist to come shoot. The result was as flaky and shambolic as you might expect. But it had some upsides. One of the first responders to a Craigslist ad agreed to meet me at the restaurant across from my studio space. I was SO very new to this game and so very taken aback to have a girl in a wheelchair come rolling in. A lot of things went through my mind. Most pressingly, how the hell were we going to deal with the stairs to my space? I wasn't exactly ADA-compliant. And WHAT were we going to do? How was this going to work? We talked for a bit and I heard myself say something like "well, let's find out how we're going to do this!" in a cheerful voice and we rolled across the street. I don't know if this is going to sound insensitive or stupid but the thing I kept thinking was that I had better do a good job figuring this out because this gal had WAY bigger balls than I think I might under a similar circumstance. I've run into a few situations like this now and it turns out that the trick is simply to pull up your big boy pants (metaphorically - don't take them off in the first place!) and find a path between treating them like anybody else and asking the obvious honest questions, like "how are we gonna do stairs?" She had an idea. She dragged herself up 'em. I was impressed and carried the chair. I did have SOME relevant experience to this awkwardness. Back in high school I took a radio broadcasting course that drew from the entire district. Part of our course was spending a shift on-air and I promptly volunteered for the last shift on Friday, 6pm - 8pm. That shift came with a set of keys to lock the place up. Or....open it? Nobody else seemed to want to ruin their Friday night playing "Ebony and Ivory" or whatever hit we had from Huey Lewis & The News so I spent every Friday night of my senior year closing down the station at 8pm and then smoking dope in the parking lot for two hours until I figured anyone who might care would be asleep and UN-closing the station and loading in my personal collection of punk, Euro-disco and the fledgling underground metal scene. We could be heard all over the Seattle area. I gave out the phone number to take callers and PEOPLE ACTUALLY CALLED. People, as it turned out, included girls. A lot of them. There was a lot of flirting on the radio. I had never heard of Howard Stern and Christian Slater wouldn't make "Pump Up The Volume" until several years later so as far as I was concerned I was the most brilliant teenager EVER. Eventually I picked up a regular caller, a gal who would call and talk dirty/witty/funny as long as I wanted to stay on the air. I was 16 and I was dying to meet this wild thing. She had a husky laugh and told me she was 18 and she loved radio and loved what I was doing. But she wouldn't agree to meet in person. But she kept calling back. Eventually she said yes but it came with warnings. I wasn't going to like her. I would run. She hinted at extreme problems, ugliness, curses. I possessed the unbreakable optimism of a young suburbanite who had never experienced anything more annoying than an ill-timed pimple. My own Worst Date Ever was still more than a year away. How bad could it be? It couldn't be that bad -- she was funny, smart, dirty.... It will come as no surprise to learn that you should probably take people at their word. My anonymous caller turned out to be the first person I ever met, certainly of my own age, in a wheelchair. And there was a LOT going on. Dwarfism? Definitely bone deformities. And she expected me to run. I think I'd have a very different view of myself if I had to live with running from that date. I don't remember enough of it to have any real understanding of whether I did OK or not but we went to dinner and a movie and hung out for a while afterward and talked. She told me a lot of stuff and we sat in a park overlooking Elliott Bay, at the north end of the Market, and I focused on her voice, which was husky and smart and funny. I'm probably no more prepared now than then to deal with that interaction but I knew that I had to show the respect and care that she deserved for showing up in the first place. She had bigger balls than I thought I would have. She deserved my time and effort to be the best person I could be. And so too did the gal who answered my Craigslist ad. I honestly don't know WTF to think but it seems like the starting point is to give somebody who shows that kind of bravery the respect of doing a good job and not being an ass. So off we went and she had beautiful eyes and we were slow and it was funny and we laughed at ourselves and figured out how to do it. That might have been my second or third shoot with someone I didn't already know and it really changed what I thought photography could be and how I was going to interact with people. Wherever she is, I'm sending a smile and a bit of thanks her way.

I found Ashley on the internet, perhaps the most-tattooed gal for at least a hundred miles in any general direction from her home, and invited her to shoot with me on what turned out to be the worst travel weekend of the year. I had a friend with me and she helped me pick out the road as we raced full-dark and a worsening blizzard to get to our remote rental cabin. I sent Ashley a note and tried to wave her off -- I didn't want to be responsible for anyone attempting to travel. She was all "nawww, I got this" and rolled up in a supercharged sports car with all-wheel drive and snow tires in what I can only describe as record time. I would have taken twice as long to make the drive. LOL. Which is maybe what I love about this photography thing. I really enjoy meeting people who are intent on being themselves and are willing to jump into a challenge and make something wonderful. We wound up spending far longer than we anticipated and I offered her the spare bedroom rather than drive several hours home but she was, again, all "nawwwww, I got this" and whirled off into the night. She sent a "got here safe" note, having apparently blown through the storm well over the speed limit. Damn. I've come back to these a few times and am currently discovering that improvements in my edit knowledge really help them get where I wanted them to go in the first place. She must have liked what I sent her at the time because I wound up driving into the desert 18 months later to meet she and her husband and shoot some maternity pictures for them, which I really enjoyed. Pregnant women are gorgeous in a really special and visceral way and it's a treat to capture that. I heard from her again a few years later when she was coming into Portland but we didn't manage to align our schedules and all of her contacts have gone dead since then. I wish I knew where she was just so I could send her some of these again -- I think she'd get a smile out of 'em.

I am REALLY loving this concept. And I love, mostly, that it's an analog real-world process. Oh, it certainly results in a LOT of failure but the resulting chaos is wonderful fun during the winter months when I get to try to pick meaning out of the box. I think I've tried this five times and each time has yielded drastically different results, each episode dear to me for different reasons. And the editing process helps teach me SOMETHING about how to approach it...although those lessons are difficult to remember and implement in the next moment. Illyria has her trademark wisp-of-hair in full force for most of these and I found that it became the thing I was able to focus on and pull through each picture. It lends both a touchstone to recognize and an intimacy that I really like. Of late, I've spent a lot of time looking at other photographers and questioning my own approach to nude art. What do I want for my images? I saw someone I respect discussing a similar moment and his thinking was that he wanted to focus in on a style, to make his work more recognizable. I'm not sure about that idea. A few people have mentioned to me that they can see a common approach across my work and after a decade I'm beginning to think that as well. It's not whether it's color or monochrome, blurs or crisp....it's something less definable in the FEEL and I think I like that. I've seen photographers who shoot the exact same thing over and over and over and over and while they may have an exceptional thing going on it seems like a constricting box to place yourself into. I've spent a lot of time looking up my favorite models, too, and I'll try to choose my words carefully. Every photographer deserves the lessons brought by a fantastic model who is attempting to discern and carry out the vision of the moment. And as a viewer I can certainly appreciate a great "nude in nature" or even just a bit of T&A. No lie. I like it. As the guy behind the camera, however, I would really like to NOT add to the flood of sameness. Most particularly, I guess, I would want my mother or my daughters to be able to step into my work and not have it be gross. I appreciate women as erotic or sexual beings PERSONALLY but that's not where I want my headspace to be "professionally". And I guess I should be honest with myself and note that I'm aware that I've missed that as much as I've hit it. It's an aspirational goal and it's become more achievable as I've grown. Does that sound snobby or all high and mighty? Literally, the thing I love about these shots is that I could do this with my Mom. Not literally...she's dead. And she wouldn't have done it anyway. But you get the idea. My personal vision of nude art is to transcend the nudity and give the viewer something interesting to puzzle over. Look at it long enough and a story comes into focus. It won't always play out that way but those are the ones that I really get excited about. Maybe the other driving force here is a compulsion toward a feeling of intimacy. NOT to imply that I (the photographer) am being sexually intimate with them (the model), which is a theme I think we all see from time to time among photographers. But an intimacy that the viewer, that mythical person standing in front of an object on the wall, can FEEL connected with as they take it in. I think a lot of this comes from a lifetime of really amazing connections with women. Lots of connection also implies a good number of disastrous endings but the thing I've taken away from each is how amazing it has been to know them and to be involved with a number of really strong and unique women. High-powered legal eagle, political activist, lingerie enthusiast, industrial fashion linchpin, artist, engineer....they've all been very different intellectually as well as physically. Tall, short, brunette, redheaded, Welsh, German, Hungarian or Hawaiian. Some of it has been terribly painful but it's all been amazing and it's pictures like this one that convey all of those feelings from me to you. This last decade I've used photography as a relationship-substitute and I think it's been pretty healthy for me. So I keep looking for ways to....kind of..anonymize my models. I love a good face and portrait but when elevating out of "oh, pretty" to "what the fuck is going on" I think it's helpful to keep it from being an overly-specific person. Let the viewer fill in with their imagination and their own story to provide clarity. To some degree, I realize that my favorite models aren't the best for where I want to wind up with this work. They have too much personality and it becomes (OH so arduously) a document of who THEY are in the moment and THEIR story. I don't mind it a bit. But their strength of personality provides a stumbling block to that tabula rasa that would let the story move ahead without interference. For all her recognizable beauty, Illyria does an excellent job of becoming transparent to the moment. The past few years have seen her become one of the more recognizable art models in the upper tier but it SEEMS as though she maintains an anonymity, a remove from the moment, that lets her better fulfill that next step of becoming universal. That's a big load to put on anyone but it seems that way to me. The best part of this whole pastime is that the chase can go on forever. There's always a new way to tell the story because we are, in essence, creating a storyboard for the viewer to detail. I don't know what the story will be when you stand in front of it. Amazing. I'm reminded of an early song by Husker Du that my teenage-self loved and obsessed over. It was written by a gay man and I eventually found out that it was for another man and about the insecurities of a young male-male relationship. It was ambiguous enough that a testosterone-addled 15-year-old could sing along and think about the girl who sat two seats ahead in Geography. It was a great song and the impetus behind it didn't matter. I still sing it and now it makes me think about the common experiences of infatuation between people. That's a great song.
