Cuts at Natural Resources Canada put critical environmental protections at risk and weaken public services
More than 200 PSAC members at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) received notices this week warning they may lose their jobs as the federal government pushes ahead with its plan to slash critical public services and cut another 30,000 federal public service workers over the next three years.

PSAC supports efforts to prevent involuntary layoffs. But any early departure program must be negotiated with the union, because no one should be pressured into giving up hard-fought rights. 1/2

Thousands of PSAC members are receiving letters from the federal government saying they may be eligible for the proposed early retirement incentive. Let's be clear: any involuntary layoff falls under our collective agreement, and we will enforce those protections. 1/2

4/6 But will they take the bait?

PSAC President Sharon DeSousa is skeptical. She told reporters she doesn't expect a rush to the exits, citing a blunt economic reality:

"The high cost of living."

The letters are in the mail. As the federal government scrambles to cut 40,000 jobs, it is offering a "golden handshake" to older workers to save the younger ones.

The government’s own analysis shows it could save $6 billion with flexible remote work for federal workers and selling office spaces. So, this plan to force workers back into the office 5 days/week makes no sense.

PSAC will fight this plan on every front – including legal action if necessary.

PSAC members and former members are, once again, getting unfairly burned by Phoenix. The federal government is resorting to threats and intimidation tactics against workers who didn't even know they were overpaid – nearly a decade ago. It’s not only unacceptable, but also against the law.
