On the #PacificHistoryGuide blog: the popular Japanese legend of #Momotaro. A statue of him was recently stolen in San Jose, CA so it feels like the right time to talk about this. Momotaro is everywhere in Japan, from children’s books to war propaganda.

A proud ship that deserved a better end. Kongo should be a museum today. I’d have a page dedicated just for her. #PacificHistoryGuide
#OTD Nov. 21 in 1944, the #ImperialJapaneseNavy battleship Kongo was torpedoed and sunk in the Formosa Strait by #USSSealion. #Kongo had a long and storied service history; the last #IJN capital ship built outside of Japan, she had entered service in 1913. #NavalHistory

I live about five minutes’ walk from the Recruit. It really helps my mental health to be able to walk to the ship and along the water whenever I want. #PacificHistoryGuide
This is #USSRecruit TDE-1, a key component of basic training when Naval Training Center San Diego was open. There’s a museum just inside the entrance amidships on the port side; you can’t go on the weather decks or bridge. A fixture of what is now Liberty Ststion. #NavalHistory #PacificHistoryGuide

I recommend visiting #Saipan soon; the people are warm and welcoming, and there are a great deal of war monuments around the island, all beautifully preserved in a respectful and solemn fashion. The view from Mt. Tapochau is stunning. #PacificHistoryGuide #History #SWW #WW2 #SecondWorldWar #Marianas
Great read here about the command crisis on #Saipan. Outside of military history circles, you don't hear many people talk about this affair, which led to a toxic Army-Marine relationship during a crucial battle that neither could afford to be responsible for losing.
