One of the first things I drew in the early days of Park Lore were "badges" to commemorate the "Disney Mountains." Just for fun, I thought it would be a good time to refresh and upgrade those rough sketches into more refined sticker designs! I think it's a fun collection! #ParkLoreArt

A brand new #LayoutTuesday illustration this week – a peek inside THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS: OFF THE LEASH! If you're still thinking Universal can't deliver in this genre, this ride will prove otherwise. 60+ animatronics, phenomenal gags, so much detail... A home run! #ParkLoreArt

For #LayoutTuesday, here's a look at the before & after of Islands of Adventure's Jurassic Park. The world-building walkthrough TRICERATOPS ENCOUNTER and the high speed VELOCICOASTER both bring guests close to dinosaurs...! Just, y'know, at a different speed #ParkLoreArt parklore.com/main/then-now

Before Nemo, there was THE LIVING SEAS. Guests would access this pavilion through a complex, multi-phase introduction that included a pre-show film, a "descent" in underwater Hydrolators, and an arrival at SeaBase Alpha via an Omnimover through the ocean. #ParkLoreArt #LayoutTuesday

The annual TEA / AECOM theme park attendance estimates for 2024 have been published! So of course, I took that as an opportunity to do some data visualization, then write a 3,000 word reflection on 2024's trends. 😎 Check out my thoughts at parklore.com/vault/attendance-2024! #ParkLoreArt

It's a brand new #LayoutTuesday, featuring SeaWorld Orlando's EMPIRE OF THE PENGUIN! The product of one of SeaWorld's periodic eras of (invariably doomed) ambition, the ride beat Disney & Universal to the trackless LPS dark ride punch! But the results? Well... 😬 #ParkLoreArt

A new #LayoutTuesday entry this week! PINOCCHIO'S DARING JOURNEY debuted at Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, built in tandem with one in Disneyland's New Fantasyland the same year. Then, it was an Opening Day Original in Paris! #ParkLoreArt

NEW! At Hong Kong Disneyland, the JUNGLE RIVER CRUISE was one of just two opening day headliners. Serving as the park's "Rivers of America" (with Tarzan's Treehouse as its Tom Sawyer Island), this unique version ends with a battle of the fire & water gods. #ParkLoreArt #LayoutTuesday

Once the Big Bad Wolf was felled, a "spiritual sequel" arose in its place. VERBOLTEN is a multi-launch family coaster filled with surprises that literally recreates Big Bad Wolf's finale!

There's maybe no more legendary lost coaster than Busch Gardens Williamsburg's BIG BAD WOLF – a suspended, swinging Arrow classic that turned a generation into a rampaging storybook creature terrorizing a German village. #ParkLoreArt #LayoutTuesday

I realized this week that somehow, I had never drawn the layout for Disneyland's version of Tiana's Bayou Adventure! So for #LayoutTuesday this week, we're goin' down the bayou. See how it compares to Magic Kingdom's at parklore.com/main/here-there #ParkLoreArt

I'm overwhelmed seeing years of creativity, ambition, & heart coalesce in Epic Universe.

I haven't visited, so I spent time getting to know this park in my way: by drawing it. This layout isn't perfect, but it helped me understand the personality of a park that's now ours to explore. #ParkLoreArt

It's wild to see that the lifetimes of some of these venerated classics were actually relatively short, and that the "replacements" are – in many cases – actually more "historic" than the originals! Tap the image to see all the case studies on one to-scale graphic. #ParkLoreArt

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a nexus event around which the themed design industry has pivoted. So maybe it's not a surprise that despite feeling quite new, it's already FAR outlived the section of the Lost Continent it replaced. buff.ly/NTdpNXC #ParkLoreArt

THEN & NOW: Illustrating the Before-and-After Ride Layouts of Theme Parks' Lost Legends and Closed Classics - Park Lore
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then hopefully my next major project here at Park Lore makes sparking memories and preserving ride histories a whole lot easier to do! First up, THEN & NOW…

I know it doesn't make logical sense, but it *feels* like Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin is part of a very contemporary wave of IP infusion. But it's existed a whole lot longer than the original If You Had Wings, and is practically a "classic" itself now?! #ParkLoreArt

Adventure Thru Inner Space was the first Omnimover dark ride and an anchor of Walt's mid-century New Tomorrowland. How it was re-purposed into STAR TOURS is fascinating (see buff.ly/VghJQmI). But even Star Tours "2.0" is near to outliving the microscopic original. #ParkLoreArt

I think in general, we tend to feel that EPCOT's OG Journey into Imagination (buff.ly/uFeexXY) was there "forever" before it was unjustly felled. But weirdly, that building has hosted Dr. Nigel Channing far longer than it ever had Dreamfinder. #ParkLoreArt
April 10, 2025 at 3:32 PM
... Same, obviously, for the switch from Kongfrontation (buff.ly/U6gdIrL) to Revenge of the Mummy, which has now occupied that giant soundstage far longer than the "classic" Kong ride ever did. #ParkLoreArt

For example, while it *feels* like Stitch's Great Escape was a sort of semi-permanent character overlay of the cult classic Alien Encounter (buff.ly/D7vTJJg), Stitch actually existed in that space for nearly twice as long as X-S Tech ever did. #ParkLoreArt

For #LayoutTuesday, here's Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress. When it debuted at the 1964 World's Fair, the final scene was set in the "present". For 1994's New Tomorrowland, the finale leapt forward, the ride was re-scripted, and "A Great, Big, Beautiful Tomorrow" was restored. #ParkLoreArt

In an hour, I'll be publishing a brand new #ParkLoreArt series, and I need your help! I spent a lot of time on this one, and if no one shares it and or engages, I think I'll basically just retire in shame. If you see it, share it! If you don't come find it at #ParkLoreLandline! 🥲

Another bit of #ParkLoreArt that I think says a thousand words – the ride lineups of Disney and Universal's major theme parks. You can read more about the data here and see a breakdown of every ride that's counted at buff.ly/cbpWsgK.

#LayoutTuesday, evening edition! While most Buzz Lightyear dark rides were stuffed into a CircleVision theater, Florida's was built on the 1972 ride system of "If You Had Wings" (parklore.com/main/if-you-had-wings). See how the two rides' layouts compare at parklore.com/main/then-now! #ParkLoreArt

While we're looking at theme park ride lineups and data visualization, here's an interesting perspective – the total ride lineups of Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World! A nice graph to share for when someone says, "Well we always go to one, why should we go to the other, too?" #ParkLoreArt
