Top-Down Processing

despite the blur and low lighting of the photo, the brain uses prior knowledge to understand the scene. the coloured lights, silhouettes of a group of friends, and the menu and bottles help the brains recognize this image as a bar

A power outlet that looks like a shocked face! 😲 This is an example of pareidolia (face recognition), where out brain's ability to identify human-like features detects familiar patterns in objects, even when no actual face exists.

This is a picture of a glass of sparkling champagne and if you look closely at the background, even though it’s blurred, you can spot the big white and blue cruise ship.top-down processing and how it helps us recognize objects even out of focus. #perceptionscavengerhunt @drelizabetholds.bsky.social

With the use of our top-down processing, we are able to understand the overall picture of the puzzle is a beach, even when a few pieces are missing!

This diamond art I did shows top-down processing,as I recognize it as London based on past knowledge.Despite being made of tiny diamonds, familiar icons like Big Ben and the red phone booth help my brain fill in gaps using context and experience. @drelizabetholds.bsky.social #PerceptionScavengerHunt

this is an ex. of gestalt principles of good figure. when lights coming from individual wristbands are arranged to form a heart, the viewer naturally organizes the scattered points of light into a unified, clear image of a heart.

This picture showcases a light switch in my apartment which hasn't reached its absolute threshold. Light is only produced once this threshold has been surpassed, with the switch being positioned slightly below this point no light is produced.

Here’s a picture of my dog in progressive pixelation, as the image loses detail, the brain is able to fill the gaps using the gestalt principle of closure to recognize the picture.

The snowy sidewalk shows depth perception using linear perspective - the path narrows into the distance, making it look farther away. The streetlights appear smaller as they recede, adding to the illusion of depth.

This is a photo I took a while ago with a dolphin, who are a prime example of using rarefaction and compression in the water to communicate with each other (echolocation). They rely heavily on sound perception, and are also incredibly cute:) @drelizabetholds.bsky.social #PerceptionScavengerHunt

In this video, you can hear how the taller plastic bottle creates more of an echo when water is poured due to sound waves bouncing off inside the bottle for longer. The shorter cup limits the resonance duration compared to the taller one.

This is an example of a threshold being reached. Much like an action potential threshold of a neuron to fire, this pot of water reached it's boiling point!

Gestalt principle of perceptual grouping (and our difficulty with it): My two cats' matching fur colours make them appear as one, making it hard to detect the second cat at first glance.

*Hint* Look for the ear of the black cat!

Rabbit or Duck?? Example from my show of top-down processing like the example in lecture: your prior experience and knowledge influences your perception of an ambiguous image. I love optical illusions like this!

The lens in our eye uses accommodation to focus on objects at different distances. We can see the iced tea clearly when our lens is relaxed, but the candle is blurry. When we look further, our lens changes shape to bring the candle into focus. #PerceptionScavengerHunt

This image represents pareidolia as when you look closely at the photo you can see an angel flying over what looks like a man's body. Our brain uses pareidolia to see figures like outlines of a person in random stimuli even if there isn't one.

In this video, my younger sister and my mom showcase speech perception in action! As they sing together, their voices blend, yet each phoneme remains distinct, demonstrating perceptual constancy.

The concept of a threshold: Similar to neurons only firing an action potential when the threshold is met, Photosynthesis in plants only begins when light intensity meets the threshold for the plant’s chlorophyll to activate the process.

Round 3: Occlusion and its role in depth perception
@drelizabetholds.bsky.social
Occlusion in action: the larger candle blocks part of the smaller one, creating a visual cue that the smaller candle is farther away, helping us perceive depth in the scene.

An example of top-down processing. The sentence contains missing letters but our brains can still identify the message due to our knowledge of these words and context of the billboard.

This photo demonstrates colour constancy, where an object's hue appears stable despite changes in lighting. One photo is taken in the dark and the other in daylight, yet the water bottle is perceived as pink in both. #PerceptionScavengerHunt @drelizabetholds.bsky.social @DrElizabethOlds
