European Minnows (Phoxinus phoxinus) & European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) were very much the dominant fish in Ullswater at Howtown, but I did also see a handful of small Common Roach (Rutilus rutilus).

River Lowther has multitudes of large, healthy European Minnows (Phoxinus phoxinus). Some gave me a manicure! In fact all the #fish were in rude health (but a minnow had back injury maybe from a Kingfisher attack).

Taking images of these small #fishes 🐟 is not that easy. No idea about the species, but @inaturalist.bsky.social app suggested Phoxinus phoxinus.

The biodiversity panorama in Pyrinean lakes is often depressing
Lac des Espécieres, at some 2200 masl should be fool of Callotriton newts and tadpoles of other amphibians... I could only see one Alytes tadpole
But I did see thousands of invasive minnow (Phoxinus), loaches (Barbatula) and trout

Here's close ups of the attentions my hands were receiving from European Minnows (Phoxinus phoxinus) & Common Gudgeon (Gobio gobio) in the River Lark, in the place where they all congregate in the turbulent water at the base of the new #fish pass installed at Turf Lock Mildenhall. #WestSuffolk 4/17

In this 400m stretch of River Little Ouse down from Lakenheath Fen, Gudgeon (Gobio gobio) are common, but only the occasional European Minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus). Saw only two Northern Pike, one small jack Pike & a larger one being mobbed like birds to an owl. #Rivers #Fishsky #Teamfish #fish 11/23

Rather than a story of recent invasions, Phoxinus in the Sieg is a case of cryptic nativeness—highlighting the importance of historical context and genetic tools in biodiversity assessments.

🧬Through COI barcoding & stakeholder interviews, we found:

✅ Clade 5b (P. csikii) is native to both the Ahr & the mountainous Sieg

✅ Clade 10 (P. phoxinus) is native to the Sieg's foothills

🚚 Historical introductions brought additional clades (10, 11, 12) via (trout) stocking from other drainages

Divendres vam tenir l'esperada sortida!

The male Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis had bitten off more than he could 'chew' in a small London park this morning. He had dived from a branch of the storm-felled tree, and emerged with a brace of Common Minnows Phoxinus phoxinus! Only one was likely to have been swallowed.
