#Pinker
I’m struck this morning by an analogy: Steve Pinker described music as “auditory cheesecake”, credible signaling without precise content meeting; LLMs produce “linguistic cheesecake” that maxes dopamine responses but without meaning

The session where Pinker spoke also deserves reading.

Q to Pinker: Harvard recently eliminated its EDI office [...] What impact did that have?
A (Pinker): Applicants for grants will have to waste less time on showing how their research will benefit minorities.

There is much more to say about the attack on independent research being organized by Conservatives in Ottawa, but the thing I find most shocking is that Steven Pinker, after seeing his critiques empower the right-wing project to destroy US research dominance, is beating the same drum in Canada
The Canadian Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Research is launching a US-style attack on EDI in Tri-Council funding.

As part of this attack, they are demanding disclosure of confidential demographic info + reviewer comments of all Canadian researchers who have applied b/w 2000-2025.

Wokeness expert Steven Pinker!!
The committee hosted Steven Pinker, who said, "Canada has the reputation now of being more woke than the United State... because of some of these EDI programs and policies that are being put in place, researchers do not feel welcome here."

This fantasy is being deployed to create anti-EDI policy.

I should add, btw: I wasn't raised in Judaism. but the Judaism that I embrace supports my understanding of the world and my place in it, support I was unable to find elsewhere.

besides, it's not like Dawkins or Pinker would know morality if it came up and told them to quit being shitty to people.

Mongarlowe sun orchids - plants out on roadside verges here were either fairly typical spotted sun orchids (Thelymitra ixioides - blue with spots) with the occasional really nice unspotted form. Didn't see any other major colour variations - just a couple of slighty pinker unspotted flowers #orchids

Steven Pinker who is the supposed “authority” cited on banning DEI and testified at this HOC committee, was a witness in Jeffrey Epstein’s defense.

And no one helps defend a sex trafficker *by mistake*

Of course the CPC love him.

I've seen Democrats defend Gavin Newsom's fascistic policies. Liberals love eugenicist-ey Steven Pinker. And Ezra Klein said that Charlie Kirk, fascist, was "doing politics the right way". So it's not just Republicans that have an affinity for fascism.

Steven Pinker should be forced to listen to his own opinions blasted through megaphones directly at his home and workplace 24/7.

I would really love to see Canadian media writing about this deeply unethical overreach that is an attack on EDI and will put thousands of Canadian researchers at risk should their confidential information be handed over. Plus, Steven Pinker is involved, that element is concerning enough on its own.
If you have or have had Tri-Council funding you, too, may be concerned about this Parliamentary Committee request for confidential data.

Also, these clowns asked for 5 years of data on applications from everyone from MA students to Canada Research Chairs in... an excel spreadsheet. 15 days notice.

Nature piece about the latest book by Steven Pinker, where he complains about the “cancel culture”, showing how difficult is the life of a “cancelled” intellectual, like he says so many times in all his books and podcasts and interviews

Steven Pinker: It is the state in which I know something, you know it, I know that you know it, you know that I know it, I know that you know that I know that you know it, and so on. It differs from private knowledge, in which someone knows something without knowing whether anyone knows they know it
