The Egg

Here at the end
of the room
in the gloom
as I bend
by my leg
is an egg.
Nobody knows
why it's there
they don't care
why it glows
and how come
there's a hum.
This eerie sound
like a spell
from the shell
floats around
everywhere
in the air.
I hear a tap.
What is hiding
inside?
Rap-rap-rap
and again
and again!
Then the shell splits
and I jump
my heart thumps.
And my wits!
Things go black.
IT IS BACK.

A Submarine Sandwich

I’d love to eat a submarine sandwich
While deep down beneath the sea
Pickles, salami, tomato and cheese–
The mermaids would envy me!

I’d love to eat a submarine sandwich
With toppings never lackin’
I’d gobble it up, and not share a crumb
Not even with a kraken!

I’d love to eat a submarine sandwich
Complete with a side of chips
And if a great white stopped by for a nosh
I’d hide among sunken ships

I’d love to eat a submarine sandwich
Yes, that meal would do the trick
There’s only one hitch in my little plan
I always get so seasick!

I love the newsletter by @grantdraws.bsky.social and was excited to see his new book Poetry Comics at the library. He does wonderful, inventive things with the comics form. Strong recommend.

Page shows a nine-panel graphic novel format, but the illustration on the panel is page-wide. Each panel has a little bit of a single poem about a tree, but the page as a whole shows the tree, though every individual panel shows only a tiny bit of the tree.

Dad’s Two Tummies

My dad has got a tummy.
But I say it looks like TWO.
Dad says he might sell one of them –
Like that’s something you can do!

I think he needs to exercise,
Eat one or two less treats.
Perhaps he should chase after me
As I’m fast and VERY sweet.
