Yeah, like I said, it has its issues, but it works. My thought is that Spock felt obligated to marry Saavik after mating with her during his Pon'Farr on the Genesis Planet. Why they never mention her in canon again after TVH, I don't know.

The Star Trek: The Motion Picture novelisation is a lot of fun regarding this, because it basically says that Kirk is bisexual, but Spock's logic and the whole Pon'farr thing got in the way of anything happening.
