Classroom management secret: Prevention beats intervention every time.

I just moved a chronically distracted student's desk, and suddenly, they're participating.

Sometimes it's that simple. #ClassroomManagement #PositiveClassroom #EduSky

Building A Positive Learning Environment: The Role Of Teachers And Pupils
Education is the foundation of personal and societal growth, and at the heart of this system lies the relationship between teachers and pupils. The way both parties conduct themselves greatly influences the effectiveness of teaching and learning. But how can we ensure a respectful and productive classroom atmosphere? THE ROLE OF TEACHERS Teachers are not just instructors; they are mentors, role models and facilitators of knowledge. Their conduct plays a significant role in shaping pupils’ behavior and attitudes toward learning. A teacher should exhibit professionalism, patience and fairness in dealing with pupils. By maintaining discipline, setting high expectations and showing empathy, teachers create an environment that fosters respect and academic excellence. Teachers are leaders in education. Their approach to discipline, engagement and communication sets the tone for a productive learning environment. In Namibia, teachers are expected to uphold professionalism, fairness and integrity while interacting with pupils. A teacher who is well-prepared, respectful and encouraging helps pupils feel motivated and valued. However, instances of poor communication or ineffective classroom management can hinder progress. Schools must ensure that teachers receive adequate training to manage diverse classrooms and inspire a culture of excellence. THE ROLE OF PUPILS Pupils, on the other hand, must also take responsibility for their own behavior. When both teachers and pupils uphold positive behaviour, the classroom transforms into a space for growth, knowledge and empowerment. Pupils also carry significant responsibility in creating a respectful academic atmosphere. Respect for teachers, adherence to school rules and dedication to studies contribute to a positive educational experience. When pupils cultivate discipline and a thirst for knowledge, they set themselves up for success. Unfortunately, challenges such as disruptive behaviour, a lack of motivation and peer conflicts can affect learning outcomes. Addressing these issues requires a collaborative approach from teachers, parents and educational authorities. CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS In some Namibian schools, concerns about teacher misconduct, pupils indiscipline and ineffective communication persist. Cases of disrespect, absenteeism and poor academic performance highlight the need for improved strategies. Schools must implement clear conduct policies, encourage mentorship programmes and strengthen parent-teacher relationships to create a more supportive learning environment. Moreover, fostering open dialogue between teachers and pupils ensures that concerns are addressed before they escalate. SHARED RESPONSIBILITY The success of Namibia’s education system depends on the combined efforts of teachers, pupils, parents and the community. By promoting respect, accountability and professionalism, schools can cultivate a learning environment that nurtures both academic excellence and personal development. It is time for all stakeholders to recommit to fostering a culture of responsibility and respect in Namibian classrooms. – Veronika Franciskus is a member of the sixth session of the Children’s Parliament of Namibia.
