Ca ne veut pas dire qu'il n'y a jamais d'histoires (je ne suis quand même pas naïf à ce point), mais je pense que ça coupe un peu les velléités de certains vis à vis du mandarinat, du fait de jouer au pygmalion etc.

Thing I didn't know till just now:

The actress Selina Cadell (so excellent on my last night's Poirot) is the granddaughter of Jean Cadell, whom some of us know best from Pygmalion and I Know Where I'm Going! (Or as Mrs. Micawber opposite W. C. Fields.)

If you would like to transform your day, and you've never done this before, spend a quiet 48 minutes listening to the album Pygmalion by the band Slowdive. Seriously, I hope one of you actually does this. I don't think you'll be sorry.

Pygmalion, the play it was based on, was a rare play in which the character rebelled against its author. In the play, the relationship between Dolittle and Higgins remains unresolved: She has outgrown him.
They ruined that ending for the musical.

Bookmail pt. 7 of 8:
Pygmalion pubbed in 1977 and written by Peter Haars joins the Norwegian TBR (although he was technically German he lived most of his life in Norway). He might have been most known for his book covers but did actually write as well

I can empathize with AI psychosis because I too think I'm gonna have to Pygmalion my way out of this social rut.

(Since I'm no expert on the subject I’ll just note a few favourites:

‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ (1895)
‘The Cherry Orchard’ (1904)
‘Pygmalion’ (1912)
‘An Inspector Calls’ (1945)
‘The Browning Version’ (1952)
‘The Dresser’ (1980)
‘Translations’ (1980)
‘Conversations on a Homecoming’ (1985)
)

And unfortunately public discourse about “AI” will not provide the positive vision, because it’s obsessed with the idea that models ought to be personlike and autonomous — in order to fully replace workers, or fulfill icky Pygmalion fantasies.

“New ways of thinking” would be a better motto.

[⚠️SPOILERS, KINDA VAGUE]

ok but there's something mildly uncomfortable to me about this KSDJHKJSDGF it has the vibe of that FMA blooper where in the last episode, after everything is said and done, Ed says (again), "let's revive mom." It's giving potential Pygmalion situation 😰

I suppose I might have cited Pygmalion or Saint Joan or Heartbreak House for Shaw, but I saw a production of You Never Can Tell decades ago, in Chicago, that was one of the most delightful evenings I've ever had in a theater, so I like to give that play some public love.

And: Thank you!

Good morning also from the weekly newsletter from the Thai BL bookstore, where I assume a Pygmalion is happening but it's just a head.

RIP whichever actor gets cast as the head, all your hours in the gym were for naught, you're just a head in this one.

Pygmalion to Victor Frankenstein - "Dude, you need help."

(also, personal experience: it's impossible for there NOT to be a power dynamic in those relationships, and I think that's one reason why men find them so attractive. it's power-over, Pygmalion-esque in their fantasies, "oh she has so much potential to be molded," and they know it from the start.)

Like a combination of Galatea and Talos, the creator both Hephaestus the forge god and Pygmalion.
