3. Try to find comps that are the same genre, subgenre, and age category as your novel. #QueryTip #RevPit

5. Read your query aloud or get someone else to read it and tell you where they were confused or if they stumbled over any sentences. It's easy to get too close to it and miss these things! #QueryTip #RevPit

Small submission tip! IMO, it is usually better to just say "Hi/Dear/Hello [name of agent/editor]" than to accidentally misgender someone! It is not disrespectful to call someone by their name, and you are allowed to do it. #querytip #pubtip #publishing

I realized this issue of Kidlit Confusion was sitting as a draft of my website for weeks! 😅 Here you go, all. WARNING! This issue is more confusing than ever. #kidlit #amquerying #writers #querytip writingcommunity.ca/kidlit-confu...

#QueryTip: Your query isn’t a summary—it’s a sales pitch.

If you only had 30 seconds to pitch your MS, what would you highlight? Who are your characters? What's their predicament? What incident propels the conflict forward?

Your premise is what hooks an agent, and your writing will do the rest!

#QueryTip - Authors, if you fail to include how the book ends in the synopsis (and yes, I mean synopsis not the query letter itself) I can only assume that is how the book ends—without an ending.
Synopsis should contain spoilers. They are expected in a synopsis.

Is it okay to nudge? Of course. But keep your emotions in check. If you're losing it after 3-6 months of not hearing from an agent, how are you going to handle 1+ years of no response from editors once you're on sub? I know it's hard, but be cool, calm, and collected. #querytip #writers #amquerying

I am working on my writing and kicking back from the week.

Which means, we can start Weekend #AskEditor #AskPublisher #AskAuthor.

I cover #WriteTip #PubTip #QueryTIp #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #BookMarketing #Writing and #Publishing.

What are you writing?

Deadlines for query: I will usually pose two weeks to 30 days, but I also make sure it’s not sitting in a 4-month-deep slush pile. And I work in Journalism, 24 hours in that field is common, sometimes 30 minutes.

#querytip #WritingCommunity #AskEditor
A deadline? I had not thought of that. Is there a reasonable or standard time frame for a deadline?

Also, how personalized? Am I thinking about cover letters, where I am identifying a couple of things about each publisher, or am I thinking about fully personalized letters?

The problem with “X meets Y” descriptions of your work is that it relies on cultural references I may not know. I mean, if I said, it’s like Cities in Flight meets Tom Swift, would you know what I meant?

Rejection letters absolutely kill me. I am usually unable to write for a day or two because of my dejection. So I stopped supplying SASEs (I’m that old) and stopped waiting for responses. They always called if they want the work, never gave them a chance to hurt me.

Here's a common question we get - how many comp titles do you need in your query letter? 2 is the magic number and each should represent something different in your manuscript, i.e. 1 comp may evoke your lyrical writing. The other may have an MC similar to yours. #querytip #amquerying

Welcome to the friendly skies.

Look for a Writer-focused “starting pack” and follow the batch. Do a search for hashtags #WritingCommunity #Writing #Publishing #BookMarketing #WriteTip #PubTip #QueryTip #booksky #amwriting and whatever genre you like to write.

I’m here often helping out authors.
I'm new on Blue Sky, so I'm looking for my algorithm to send me to writers and other bookish people.
