Next up the round out the buteos, Red-shouldered Hawks at Watatic #Hawkwatch (MA) in September were sporadic migrants and mostly noisy locals. Several juveniles came in close enough for pics, including a couple visits to the decoy owl. #redshoulderedhawk #birding 🪶🦅

My favorite raptor yard visitor. The red-shouldered hawk is a sweet visitor; the other yard birds don't even flee when s/he comes by. A favorite treat is available after heavier rains - fat earthworms that rise to the surface under my willow oak.

Horizontal image: the birds not he nest are framed by the triple tree trunks that house the nest. The eyases are fluffy white with a yellow beaks tipped with black. Leaning in from the right side of the image is the the adult hawk, in shades of red, with some black on the wings and flecks of white scattered throughout. The adult has just passed a morsel of meat off to the center eyas - it's visible in the chick's beak. The left most eyas is staring over the edge of the nest, taking in the work, and the right most eyas has its head turned away from the camera.

Upper, center frame, a Red-shouldered Hawk is perched on the stag of a dead tree, facing forward but looking over their left shoulder. A tree canopy and sky make up the background. From allaboutbirds.org., Red-shouldered Hawks are medium-sized, with broad, rounded wings and medium-length tails that they fan out when soaring. In flight, they often glide or soar with their wingtips pushed slightly forward, imparting a distinctive, “reaching” posture. Adults are colorful hawks with dark-and-white checkered wings and warm reddish barring on the breast. The tail is black with narrow white bands. Immatures are brown above and white below streaked with brown. All ages show narrow, pale crescents near the wingtips in flight.
