Sen Dems: OK, we'll vote to open the government if all promise to give us a vote on health-care in the future.
Sen Repubs: (to each other "omg this is like taking candy from a baby") Yes deal!!!
Sen Dems: You guys promise? We are trusting you
Sen Repubs: Would we ever lie to you 😉

I’ve read this proposed cave of a deal and it is WRONG FOR AMERICA. Repubs want Dems to vote for a bill without health care subsidies in exchange for a “promise” Repubs will bring them back up for a vote later. DO NOT TRUST THESE LIARS! NO DEAL!!!!!
November 9, 2025 at 11:13 PM
Agree with this.

About to publish something on the airplane mess. But this too is ON THE REPUBS. It is not a reason to cave. Dems, it is a time to keep standing up.
Opening the government with no concessions from GOP merely to alleviate airline cancellations - when Congress has been dragging its feet for years on chronic FAA staffing issues - is a lame ass choice.

Also, doing it while the House refuses to work is appalling.

What’s probably happening:

Dems: We’ll end shutdown if you do what 80% of Americans want you to do

Repubs: No

Dems: Repubs don’t want a deal

Repubs: [Know they’re screwed, float fake deal to GOP-friendly hacks]

Dem Base: Fuck no!

Repubs: Dems won’t deal bc base won’t let them

The Senate passing a bill that is NOT the House CR means the House has to also vote on it. Dems are doing harm reduction and forced the repubs to cave and pass a different bill than the House. Now let's see what House repubs do.
Honestly, this is likely as good of a deal as the Democrats are going to get.

Reinstates fired federal workers. Prevents admin from re-firing them. SNAP funding for a year, and an ACA vote in December.

Voters are already blaming the GOP for the ACA - make them vote against it.

“They have to come to the table”…. is she delusional? Repubs don’t have to do anything. How can she think otherwise??
November 10, 2025 at 2:37 AM
Indeed it takes a lot of mental gymnastics to blame Dems for getting senate repubs to pass a different bill that provides relief for kids and families when repubs could have just passed the house bill. But some of y'all are conditioned to blame dems instead of repubs and the voters who gave em power
The mental gymnastics are absolutely amazing.
Yeah cause hundreds of thousands of people going without paychecks while SNAP is gutted is totally awesome /s. Also the fact dems got repubs to cave on RIFs and pass a bill that requires the house to now pass is chess while you're a pigeon kicking over checkers pieces.
November 10, 2025 at 10:43 PM
Was the possibility that Repubs would dig in and refuse to compromise because they don’t care about Dem priorities not considered before this began? If it was, was “calling attention to the issues” (the only thing achieved) worth doing this? Is a shutdown the only way to do that?
November 10, 2025 at 12:18 PM
Such a dumb question. They aren't refusing to fund the government, they're refusing to let the repubs continue their wave of death without resistance.
November 9, 2025 at 8:17 PM
It would be deeply unwise to keep the government shut down through Jan 2027. And real people were suffering. But if Dems withheld their votes for at least several more weeks you had a decent chance that:
1) Repubs popularity falls further
and/or
2) Repubs decide to end the filibuster

more proof
repubs can’t govern
November 9, 2025 at 3:43 PM
Dems caved in March expecting a better deal in Sept; Dems cave now for the promise of a better deal but without a date certain (a deal without a date certain is no deal at all!).

Repubs have had 15 years to provide a better healthcare plan

they have none

you have lost credibility

I get angry with dems at times because I expect better out of them. I dont expect an ounce of decency, decorum, or dignity out of the gop. I'll always fight to elect democrats period. Repubs are the culprits for this mess we are in, however I'm tired of dems always having to save the day.

"Shutdown RIFs." 4,100-4200, and there's already an injunction blocking most of those.

Repubs were going to lose on SNAP.

Dems got what?

Who thinks Repubs will vote to save the ACA in December? Who thinks Repub voters don't already know that it's Repubs killing the ACA? MTG figured it out, FFS.
November 10, 2025 at 1:51 AM
Yep! So senate dems got senate repubs to cave. And because of that, in order for the bill to pass, the House has to be in session and take action. So it basically forces repubs to reopen the House or keep the shutdown.
November 10, 2025 at 1:55 AM
Nah that's repubs and white voters who gave repubs total control. But sure, blame dems for not having a magic wand and doing what they can to help people who have been forced to work without pay for over a month. How long could you go without a paycheck?
I’m a Democrat but Congressional Democrats really piss me off because they always, always fuck things up.

At some point, as trump keeps opening specious investigations into people who are upholding the rule of law, the question of impeachment has to come up. I get that we’ve been there/done that, but let’s not give congressional Repubs a pass for their complicity.
The next target of Trump's retribution:

Federal prosecutors have opened a corruption investigation into D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.

But the probe could face significant hurdles because of the known facts of the case and recent DOJ turmoil.

This week, the agent leading the investigation was fired.

What fools. People will die because they can't afford their healthcare. Do they really think repubs will be honest brokers in Dec. ? They're going to laugh at dems and say FU.
November 10, 2025 at 2:33 AM
I won’t say there’s no way a bloc of 8-12 Dems will fold & vote w the Repubs without forcing the Repubs to make real concessions. But the thing yesterday about Dems giving away abortion rights was profoundly stupid & dishonest, & this Axios thing doesn’t seem much better

Would be interested in what Josh Marshall/TPM is hearing because they had the accurate read in March

Trump is now claiming "affordability" issue that caused epic GOP losses is a "con." Repubs aren't allowed to contradict the despot, so that's become GOP gospel. Meanwhile MAGA coalition is fracturing.

On the pod, Bulwark's Joe Perticone is so good in explaining this:

when interviewed why don't the democrats say it this way.

"we'll vote to fund the government when the repubs turn health care back on, and btw also food for US citizens."

make it really clear, repetitively, that the repubs could end this by doing the right thing, being human, not being terrorists.
November 9, 2025 at 10:47 PM
The whole "gee willickers, oh gosh, I hope everything works out OK" stuff from these feckless buffoons is infuriating. Everyone knows what Repubs are going to do.
November 10, 2025 at 7:47 PM
With democrats like this, who needs repubs?
November 10, 2025 at 4:19 AM
If repubs want it to be shut down. It's all on them.
