Like parsley! Did you know that Germans consume 138g/year/household? Bummer if it infected by rhabdoviruses...

We keep an eye out for novel rhabdoviruses here at the @leibniz-dsmz.bsky.social , too! With #HTS on the rise, we're seeing many unclassified, new rhabdo-like viruses, for example, in local herbs!

Transmission? Think insect vectors!
Mostly planthoppers, leafhoppers, or aphids.
#Rhabdoviruses replicate in both the insect and the plant = propagative transmission.Viruses with dual hosts and dual replication strategies are always a thrill, aren't they?

Plant rhabdoviruses belong mainly to two genera:

Cytorhabdovirus: replicate in the cytoplasm

Nucleorhabdovirus: replicate in the nucleus (!)

Yes, they hijack different compartments depending on the species.

Did you know?
Rhabdoviruses aren’t just for animals – they also infect plants (and insects)!
Their iconic bullet shape and negative-sense RNA genomes make them virologically unique across kingdoms.

Plant Virus(es) of the Month – August: Rhabdoviruses!
Welcome to the world of bullet-shaped troublemakers
This month we’re exploring plant-infecting rhabdoviruses – fascinating, complex, and often overlooked members of the virosphere.

We next showed that this mode of viral transmission is not limited to Rhabdoviruses, as we could also see deltaviruses inside of the viral particles of Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1).

Bats are indeed awesome and incredibly important within their environment! They (sadly) also pose public health risks of zoonotic disease spillover, as natural reservoirs of high consequence viral pathogens, incl. various filoviruses, henipaviruses, rhabdoviruses and paramyxoviruses 🧫🧪🔬
🦇 Why bats matter? Bats play an important role in many habitats around the world. All British bat species help control insects by feeding on them. In the UK, some are ‘indicator species’, because changes to these bat populations can indicate changes in the environment buff.ly/3Xnm3V3...

Can we really expect greedy anal sphincters to know the pathophysiology of rhabdoviruses?

But they now know what bullets (rhabdo) look like

TIL, when researching the origin of rabies, that parasitic worms are themselves infected with many viruses that might also affect the worm hosts, and that one of these viruses seems to have been the rabies ancestor 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

There's nothing quite like going through Illumina results and seeing tons of familiar viral families/genera and some new things too! Badnaviruses, curtoviruses, alexiviruses, tospoviruses, rhabdoviruses, closteroviruses, ilarviruses, poleroviruses, ?viruses, etc. Now to complete genomes and publish😆
