8 Feb 1943 // HM Trawler Bredon was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U.521 about 60km N of Lanzarote. She was on escort duty with a West Africa to Gibraltar convoy. From her crew of 46, just three survivors were picked up, after an extensive air-sea search. #RoyalNavy #WW2 #NavalHistory

8 Feb 1918 // Destroyer HMS Boxer sank after colliding with SS St Patrick off Sandown, Isle of Wight, after dark. 8 Feb 1917 // HM Drifter Aivern, a net barrier tender, was damaged in a storm in the Western Approaches while inbound from the Mediterranean with other drifters. She began to leak and soon sank. All her crew were taken off by the other drifters. #RoyalNavy #WW1 #NavalHistory

8 Feb 1859 // While serving as tender to HMS Nile at Queenstown (Cork), 10-gun brig-sloop HMS Wizard was wrecked in Bantry Bay when she ran aground in a squall. The local lighthouse keeper led a courageous rescue operation in which all her crew were saved. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

She could not be freed, so the crew burnt her and commandeered local fishing boats to attempt to escape to England. Some of the boats were picked up by HMS Sirius, but most were forced into Brest by bad weather, where their occupants were made prisoners of war. [2/2] #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

8 Feb 1794 // 'Wreck of the Ten Sail': HMS Convert (ex French frigate l'Inconstante, taken 1793) grounded off Grand Cayman and sank, along with nine merchantmen from her convoy. Local people carried out a courageous rescue: eight lives were lost from the ten ships. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

8 Feb 1709 (O.S.) // 36-gun 5th-rate HMS Winchelsey was captured by a French warship near the Berlengas off the Portuguese coast after a lengthy engagement. The northbound convoy she had been escorting escaped without harm. She was recaptured two weeks later by HMS Chester. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

7 Feb 1944 // Midget submarine HMS X.22 was accidentally sunk in the Pentland Firth while being towed to Scapa Flow by submarine HMS Syrtis. As she turned to search for a man overboard, Syrtis hit X.22 and sank her. The man from Syrtis and four men in X.22 were lost. #RoyalNavy #WW2 #NavalHistory

The escorts rescued two men, then left the area to chase (unsuccessfully) the submarine, leaving the tanker and its crew alone and adrift, an act which earned the escort commander an official reprimand. The tanker was retrieved by tug HMS Jaunty some days later. [2/2] #RoyalNavy #WW2 #NavalHistory

7 Feb 1919 // Paddle minesweeper HMS Erin's Isle (ex Belfast & County Down Railway ferry Erin's Isle, requisitioned 1915) was struck by a drifting German mine while at anchor in the Thames Estuary. She broke in two and sank within two minutes: 23 men lost their lives. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

The court martial found that the pilot was to blame for mistaking his course: he was fined and barred from ever piloting HM vessels again. Both Lieutenant Wood and the Nightingale’s master were reprimanded, the latter severely, for placing too much trust in the pilot. [3/3] #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

6 Feb 1941 // Hopper No. 39, a Suez Canal dredger requisitioned by the Admiralty and converted into a minesweeper, was sweeping aircraft-dropped magnetic mines in the canal when a mine exploded close to her bows, sinking her with the loss of four of her crew. #RoyalNavy #WW2 #NavalHistory

6 Feb 1918 // HM Trawler Nathaniel Cole was assisting liner RMS Aurania, which had been torpedoed on 4 February north of Ireland, when she was struck by the Aurania and damaged. She gradually flooded, and sank in the early morning of 6 February with no casualties. #RoyalNavy #WW1 #NavalHistory
