#SB1
Our board member @cmcknichols.bsky.social & AAUP members from OSU & around the state contributed to this @dispatch.com article on the chilling impact of SB1 across Ohio. Between legal mandates & admin overcompliance, we are living the grim reality that thousands protested for over 2 years.
The "chill is real" on #Ohio campuses right now after #SB1 *and with federal attacks on + efforts to micromanage higher education -- cancellations, closures, + chalking and land acknowledgement bans, with some quotes from me as well, great piece in the Dispatch www.dispatch.com/story/news/e...
As SB 1 impacts ripple across Ohio college campuses, students, faculty say 'the chill is real'
Two months into her final fall semester, one OSU senior said the ripple effect of Ohio Senate Bill 1 on campus has been "like a quiet roar."

If you're a faculty member at The Ohio State University, that conservative university now has workshops for how faculty should act under the state's authoritarian new higher ed law, SB1. The workshops are oriented around the "4Cs of Civil Discourse."

Of why Ohio State’s second most famous alum, Jim Jordan, weaponizes the federal government. Of why Ohio has gone authoritarian in higher ed via SB1 & is currently using an unconstitutional congressional map & is now looking to gerrymander Dems out of their seats again. Ohio is a failed state.

"In the case of land acknowledgements, the ban on factual information is a troubling example of overcompliance to SB1 & a transparent attempt to appease & cower in an anti-DEI moment."

In rural Indiana, I see it. Republicans claiming how they're leaving the party and never voting for R's again. No red hats to be found anywhere. People who voted for Trump at protest, the farmers having nowhere to take their soybeans, dismantling of small communities because of SB1.

working as an academic in ohio right now is why i have pinched nerve.

i am constantly anxious about my livelihood.

see: OHIO SB1
sorta feel like light-red states are good places to apply for academic jobs right now because a you have less competition but there's not an immediate danger of them deciding the evolution is woke due to democrats still occasionally being competitive statewide.

Dian Fossey, author of "Gorillas in the Mist":

"Fossey was also a racist alcoholic who regarded 'her' gorillas as better than the African people who lived around them. Her anthropomorphization of the apes was matched by her unceasing belittlement of the area's natives."

Repertorio, now a junior (who transferred after SB1 passed to another school out of OH) said, "I’m not going to be able to learn the things I want to learn when I’m paying for my degree. But also, why would I contribute to an economy in a state that doesn’t care about me? Why am I here?”

Here in OH, they passed SB1
Despite 800 people testifying against -based on DEI propaganda forcing universities to shutter programs and anything to do with normal diversity groups. Its fucking fascism.

I teach in Ohio, where we have SB1, the anti-higher-ed bill that requires us to maintain maximum "intellectual diversity" in the classroom and prohibits us from stating our opinions on any "controversial topic or belief."

Anyway I get the fear, it's definitely real.
