#SCIAM
It has become fairly common these days to claim that something (usually AI) predicted something after the fact. That's bullshit. That way cute animals can "predict" soccer results as well.

Apart from the headline, the SciAm-Article is well worth reading, though. And it's not about prediction.
How Math Predicted the New Pope
A decades-old technique from network science saw something in the papal conclave that AI missed

Just two thoughts:

1. The article's an ethical disaster - it handwaves copyright concerns away as "boring plumbing" and makes no mention of environmental impact. I always thought of SciAm as being very concerned with climate change and sustainability. 🤷

fucking SciAm, they get the wall too
October 15, 2025 at 6:21 AM
I was wondering why SciAm was putting out pretty blatant AI boosterism, so that explains it

Copyright growing pains? How about just theft? Shame on you, SciAm!
October 14, 2025 at 2:51 PM
The fact that the horrible SciAm article lauding a future where we conjure up an AI Marilyn Monroe for shits and giggles hasn't been able to rustle up even 100 likes, but has nearing 800 quote replies? It gives me hope that humanity hasn't completely lost the plot on AI ethics.

Large scale plagiarism just a "growing pain" to SciAm these days huh

I wish @sciam.bsky.social had a gift link function for subscribers like WaPo does. It'd be nice to share an SA article like you cite here & I'd suspect it could help to remind people that SciAm is out there and deserves to be subscribed too. This month's "Voyage to Nowhere" issue is fantastic, btw.

So if we want our idioms to be accurate, I'm sorry to say, the expression should be "like a moth FROM the flame."

SciAm article here is excellent:

I'm reasonably certain this is the 1st time I've ever been included on the short list for a #photography contest!

Many thanks to the @sciam.bsky.social staff for highlighting my recent #SciAmInTheWild selfie @ the Rufus Porter Museum.

Basically pinching myself right now because SciAm was a big deal in my household, a source of quality journalism. So unbelievably lucky to be on this journey with Colette, JP, Emma, and Leslie. They are family now. Not to mention our hundreds of volunteers nationwide. Thank you for this, Meghan!

Mmm. For a book that claims to be about science across the iron curtain, I thought it was rather annoying that the Soviet Union is only mentioned seriously on page 60 or so. Plus the author spends 2+ pages on the criticism she got based on an interview and article in SciAm. But opinions differ 😁
