There are a lot of talks at #SLSA25 #SLSA2025 on divination, magic, ritual, the occult, etc. It's very striking. I don't know much about this turn, but my immediate response is to see it as a symptom of current struggles over science and epistemology.

#SLSA2025 Games considered to be rational, like chess. Games played by dice, seen to be about hazard. Games of prudence - board games like backgammon. Even Aquinas saw the importance of games and management.

#SLSA2025 Medieval people were interested in approaching risk in literary/formal ways. The concept of risk can be distinguished from mathematical ways of knowing risk.

What a fantastic SLSA2025. It was really wonderful to see so many amazing colleagues in Liverpool. It was particularly valuable to be around other socio-legal and critical scholars in the context of the Supreme Court decision and to feel that solidarity. A few of my highlights from the conference:
