#SPSS
Yo es que no trabajo en la Unidad de Gestión, no son mis competencias, y no tengo por qué saber eso. Al igual que ellos no tienen por qué saber hacer un proyecto de investigación, ni utilizar el SPSS o el STATA, etc.

Manipulating data frames. At all 😂 I work in R, Python, SAS, SPSS, and Excel, and nothing is more useful to me than R. I do find I like manipulating unstructured text data more in Python.

Teaching someone "to code" : qualitative research :: teaching someone to use SPSS :: quantitative analysis.

In that one of those things is absolutely not the same as the second thing, and you can teach people the first part all day long and still get absolute nonsense on the second part.

Someone on a listserv I was on asked how to install SPSS on a server. I scoffed before realizing one day soon I'll be asking how to install Stata on a server and someone else will be rolling their eyes...

Someone actually made a GIF specifically for hating SPSS (that’s the logo)

Me at my laptop because SPSS (the stats program I have to use) hates me and wants me to die and it is a very mutual feeling

Danke!

Each year I teach test design I ask the master’s students how much R they’ve learned & there is a pleasant shift (lots of undergrad psych programs in Germany now teach R), but there’s always some variation—like one program relying on excel, and another that starts with R but then switches to SPSS?!

That I can understand! But the student told me semester 1-2 were R and semester 3 was SPSS? Wild. Maybe they wanted that sweet PROCESS.

In honor of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand:

Bad political scientists must collate SPSS data until they've learned their lesson. This shit is why I'm a qualitative researcher.

An excellent argument. One related way I try to get course managers’ attention is to quote the cost of SPSS licenses to students once they leave the comfort of the university site license. The cost is obsene, for a product that does far less than R, & LLM can even help students learn to program R
October 4, 2025 at 12:09 PM
Also - contrast b/w the response when I advocate teaching R instead of SPSS -- "No hurry, let's not rush into it" (still waiting) -- & others re: use of LLMs -- "It's inevitable, we're behind; need it implement it ASAP!" -- is telling. Learning to code is freeing. Overhyped LLMs create dependency.

Second, if we uncritically adopt AI in psychology, we outsource programming of our experiments to companies. This undoes a lot of open source: experiments are under industry capture, written without formal specifications. It deskills us: psychologists spent the last decade learning to code.

Have you considered getting them to use SPSS via a remote desktop connected to a university machine? Because I find that's always fun too

I just talked to a great team from Kenya who described the challenge of paying for a statistical platform like SPSS, but then loosing the license and the skills. Of course, R solves the cost issue, but it was also nice to tell them about jamovi (and JASP)--free AND easy to use. www.jamovi.org

Is there a context where an F-statistic with a given degrees of freedom doesn't have an exact single p-value associated with it?

Asking for a video of somebody's analyses would be weirdly invasive for a journal review for a problem this small (besides, SPSS does have syntax and output files).

Just like we use SPSS? For us its just a tool created by a big tech company that helps with stuff like classification. We do not see it "intelligent" or otherwise special. Its just software. You can be transparent about its probabilistic nature and the variance of its outputs.

2. Word
3. PP

Das wars eigentlich.

Also, was interessiert mich Apple?
