So #SaltonSea is a terminal lake, which means it has no outlet. Water only evaporates, leaving salt and all the chemicals from the agricultural runoff that fed it. As salinity increases and levels drop, it evaporates faster. And so on.

It's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of WHEN it's all gone.

Once upon a time, back in the 20th century, the #SaltonSea was a more popular tourist destination than Yosemite. People flocked to its beaches to swim, boat, and fish.

Now it sits deserted and all but forgotten.

I'm not sure if this photo is from 2021, but as you can see, that SOS sign was completely in the water when it was installed.

Located in the arid Imperial Valley, the aptly named and highly saline body of water is shrinking and becoming more and more toxic, leading to disuse, abandonment and environmental damage to wildlife and air quality. To save the future of these troubled waters has become uncertain is an understatement.
