Sandstone sarcophagus found at Simpelveld in the southeast of the Netherlands, decorated on the inside with a relief showing the deceased female inside a Roman villa with tiled roof, windows with shutters, and furniture. 150-175 AD. National Museum for Antiquities, Leiden.

Imperial sarcophagi in red porphyry in front of the Archaeological Museum in Istanbul. These came from the two domed mausoleums at the now-vanished Church of the Holy Apostles. It is not possible to attribute them to specific emperors. #sarcophagussunday #skystorians 🗃️ #ancientbluesky 🏺

The marble Sidamara sarcophagus in Istanbul Archaeological Museum weighs 32 tons. It dates to the Roman period, 2nd half of the 3rd century CE. This gigantic sarcophagus is 313 cm heigh, 381 cm long and 200 cm wide. Hunting and domestic scenes. #SarcophagusSunday #AncientBluesky 🏺 #skystorians 🗃️

Griffins from the tympanum of the Lycian sarcophagus of Sidon, 430-420 BC, Istanbul Archaeological Museum. It probably belonged to King Banaa of Sidon who ruled in the area of Phoenicia in the late-5th century BC. 📸 me. #SarcophagusSunday #AncientBluesky #skystorians 🗃️

The Sarcophagus of the Satrap is a marble funerary monument discovered at the royal necropolis at Ayaa in Sidon, Lebanon. It is believed to originate from the Achaemenid Persian Empire period (the mid-5th century BC). Istanbul Archeological Museum. #SarcophagusSunday #AncientBluesky #skystorians 🗃️
