SHOCKING ACCIDENT AT ROCHE

A fatal accident occurred on Thursday at Roche, Goonbarrow clayworks near Bugle, St. Austell.

Hart Tremewan aged thirty seven had for the past five years been working in Cumberland, but on Sarurday he returned to his home at Criggan Downs Roche.

On Tuesday, deceased, who was an engine driver, obtained employment at the above works.

Owing to the loosening of a cog-wheel on Thursday, Tremewan in trying to wedge it up, injured one of his fingers, the nail being completly torn away. So great was the pain and fright that deceased fainted, and was only brought around by the continual exertions of the manager to the clay works, who was present when the accident happened.

After recovering he was placed by the manager in the engine room, and strictly enjoined not to stir from the spot, being promised that assistance, to place the wheel in its proper position, should be sent.

But the deceased thinking his strength had returned, endeavoured without help to set the wheel working and turned on the steam.

This slight effort, however, seemed to have been too much for him, and for the scond time he fainted. Unfortunatly, as no one was present at the time, he fell upon two cog-wheels, now in slow motion, and was The accident was discovered by a man who was seeking frightfully mangled. employment and who gave the alarm at once, but the extent of Tremewans injuries was so great that he quickly passed away.

Deceased leaves a widow and six children. who are still in Cumberland but were preparing to come to Bugle this week. Great sympathy is felt by everyone for them.
