One more for #SaturdayLaridae A pair of Black-headed #Gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) found a good spot to chill. 😀 #BirdingHungary

Last month I saw an Oystercatcher with no left foot. Yesterday I saw a Yellow-legged Gull with no right foot. Not sure how these birds lose their feet. #BirdingItaly #gulls #SaturdayLaridae

I've seen #gulls swallow starfish whole but not old, stiff, dried-out ones. This Olympic Gull was determined. After about 20 minutes, it finally managed to swallow the thing. Yum! 😋 What a way to get yer protein! 😄 #BirdingBritishColumbia #birds #birding #SaturdayLaridae

When Glaucous-winged #Gulls breed with Western Gulls, this is the result, Olympic Gull (Larus glaucescens X occidentalis). Like the former, but with blackish wingtips. Hybrid is most prevalent on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. #BirdingBritishColumbia #SaturdayLaridae #birds #birding

Bonaparte's Gull (Chroicocephalus philadelphia). Named after Napoleon's nephew Charles Lucien Bonaparte. While his uncle was out conquering Europe, Charles was looking at birds. I think Chucky had the right idea. 😄👍 #BirdingBritishColumbia #gulls #SaturdayLaridae #birds #birding

Great one for #SaturdayLaridae ... Pallas's Gull, the type species for the Ichthyaetus genus (ie: Ichthyaetus ichthyaetus) Primarily a western Asian species that occassionally wanders over to Europe. One has spent the last few winters on Lake Balaton. #BirdingHungary #birds #birding #gulls

#saturdaylaridae From July 2023, a Western Gull nest atop one of the many boats docked in Mission Bay, San Diego. Clearly, this boat hadn't been used by humans for awhile.

#saturdaylaridae An interesting Western Gull nest in downtown Monterey, CA, from July 2023. It's on a narrow ledge above this second floor window above a downtown street. Such a small and precarious nest site is atypical of urban Westerns, much more typical of Glaucous-wingeds north in WA and BC.

Adult Common Gull (Larus canus) warming up in the morning sun. Sometimes this species can have a full ring on the bill like this one. But dang! No matter how long I stared at it, it just wouldn't turn into a Ring-billed Gull! 😅 #BirdingHungary #SaturdayLaridae #gulls #seegulls #birds #birding

#saturdaylaridae In Vancouver, December is the earliest we will see some Glaucous-winged Gull pairs return to their nest sites, more than 5 months before any eggs are actually laid.

I'm bringing back the proud tradition of #saturdaylaridae. I started this tag on IG about a decade ago and I plan to resurrect it here. Here's a peak winter plumage Glaucous-winged Gull, Vancouver, BC.
