Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is a powerful greenhouse gas, and its emissions come from agriculture, textile manufacturing, and more. Reusing and circulating second-hand clothing can reduce N₂O emissions by lowering the need for new production. A win for the planet! 🌎🌱 #SustainableFashion #SecondHandClothing

As we look towards addressing climate change, one key contributor to global warming often overlooked is Nitrous Oxide (N₂O), a greenhouse gas with a warming potential 298 times stronger than CO2. A significant portion of N₂O emissions comes from agricultural practices and textile production—particularly the use of nitrogen fertilizers in cotton farming and industrial processes in textile manufacturing.

However, there’s a powerful solution right at our fingertips: second-hand clothing. By reusing and circulating pre-loved garments, we can significantly reduce the need for new clothes production, which in turn helps decrease the emissions linked to both agricultural activities and textile manufacturing.

Studies have shown that reusing high-quality or even medium-quality second-hand clothing can save up to 3kg of CO2 emissions per item. While primarily addressing CO2, this also leads to a reduction in N₂O emissions. Furthermore, a European study found that reusing clothing results in 70 times less environmental impact compared to producing new garments, even when factoring in transportation emissions.

The impact doesn’t stop there—second-hand clothing also conserves water and reduces the consumption of raw materials. For example, reusing second-hand garments uses only 0.01% of the water required for new garment production. This is a huge step forward in fostering a circular economy that benefits both the environment and society.
