Hanging out with Messrs Benioff (left) and Gutenberg (right) in advance of my seminar at the Caltech Seismolab...
Kyle and I are visiting the Caltech SeismoLab next week to talk about Earthquake Insights!
So much of who we are now ties back to our time as undergraduate geology majors at Caltech. We are both very much looking forward to seeing the place again, twenty years later.

About a month ago when the USGS, SeismoLab, and USC deployed 58 temporary sensors in Malibu to monitor the 2 active swarms in the region. The time came this week to go grab them! It will be exciting to see what data and insights come from this deployment! buff.ly/MPjFU0u

These portable sensors will soon journey to Antarctica but they’re just as useful for rapid eq response here in SoCal! #Geophone #Geophysics #Seismolab #SCSN
Our Office Manager of Earthquake Programs, Margaret Vinci, even got in on the tests!

New paper alert! SeismoLab researcher Jessie Saunders with USGS colleague David Wald examined responses to the USGS “Did You Feel It?” (DYFI) survey and its companion earthquake early warning (EEW) questionnaire to assess ShakeAlert EEW system performance from alert recipients’ perspectives. 🧵

Some more from the Earthquake Fellows Program at the #SeismoLab! While they were in the lab the other day they got to compare the data off a DAS sensor (blue screen) and Raspberry Shake setup (red screen), while hopping around to some music!

Another big shoutout and congrats to Jiuxun Yin, former #SeismoLab postdoc and now working in the oil industry! His paper "Earthquake Magnitude With DAS: A Transferable Data‐Based Scaling Relation", in Geophysical Research Letters, ranked in the top 10% most-viewed for 2023! #TopViewedArticle

On March 21, USGS and SeismoLab researchers deployed 58 seismic nodes near Malibu to monitor an active eq sequence of 3 M4+ eqs and over 200 smaller eqs since Feb 2024!
The temporary deployment aims to better detect tiny eqs, study local faults, and refine data that supports the ShakeAlert system.

Happy birthday week to Frank Press (1924–2020), a legend in geophysics! During his time at the Caltech Seismolab, he and Ewing developed a long period seismometer and a pioneer in digital seismology. This work led to the detection of Earth's free oscillations from the 1960 M9.4 Chile EQ.

Congrats to former #SeismoLab postdoc Francesco Civilini (now @NASA)! He led the study, "Thermal Moonquake Characterization and Cataloging Using Frequency-Based Algorithms and Stochastic Gradient Descent" that ranked in the top 10% most-viewed papers in JGR: Planets for 2023! #TopViewedArticle

Another first related to the LB earthquake: it was the first time the Seismolab used a portable deployment to help record aftershocks! In 2011-2012 Seismolab Professor Rob Clayton was able to survey the Long Beach area in 2 parts using a total of 7800 sensors! buff.ly/EmhZCG4

#FieldPhotoFriday Crafton Hills seismic station, established in 1975, just got its latest tech makeover—again! Upgraded in '94, '12, '23, with maintenance twice this year alone! Our seismic stations get a glow-up to keep rocking and rolling. Regular upgrades = better quake data for all! #SeismoLab

Working on the Underworld3 release for publication. I’m at the same desk at @caltechseismo.bsky.social where a number of decades ago I worked on the CITCOM “release”. Same view of Mount Wilson, slightly nicer laptop. Thinner hair / thicker glasses.

We often have visitors to the lab, this week the Seismolab hosted students from Nanyang Technical University in Singapore led by Dr Aron Melzer, a graduate of Caltech. Their trip included learning about earthquakes and earthquake monitoring in SoCal with Margaret Vinci!
