I've now fixed that close-up weirdness by using (65535 - dist) instead of just (-dist) for the 16-bit depth value :) It was definitely an issue with the value zero, lol.

If fucking works!!!
I can now test individual shaders/kernels. This unlocks fierce power of doing GPU stuff in browser, with high fidelity.

*baffling we've been stuck on Shader Model 6.0 for a decade... hell I can't count even fully one hand games that have fully utilized DX12U Feature set (Mesh Shaders, Sampler Feedback etc). Alan Wake 2 did it greatly but the "un0mptimized!!!11!" just ruined things, c'mon GTX 10 gotta die eventually.

It's so invigorating to work on these tbh, because I'm always trying something new. Recreating an effect I saw somewhere, practicing new tools, fiddling with new shaders/lighting... And it just reminds me how far I came mentally with working on these too.
I genuinely love my craft.

Having said that: I do honestly feel this is really useful experience esp. as I'm once again brushing up on modern graphics pipelines and shaders etc...

I was pointed towards this by Ryan Trawick, the great tech artist behind all the custom tooling, shaders, models, and optimization for the Tiny Combat Arena terrain. He's wrapped up work on TCA, so if you're looking for a tech artist specialized in "retro" rendering get in touch!

Remember the instructions I gave you on how you can install shaders from the launcher? U can do the same thing for mods.
Look for smth called “Xaero's Minimap”. As it name suggests, it gives you a minimal to help u navigate and you can set waypoints to help u find stuff!

That one has quite a few diff shaders. Otherwise just be on a lookout!

Anyway I got my ally docked and controller connected, enshrouded is purchased and shaders are compiling soo slowly. 😂

Here's a thread containing some stylized textures, shaders/materials, and foliage I created using Blender, Designer and UE5 back in 2024.
(1/7) The grass took the majority of my time, and includes various features and optimizations. Among the standouts were the edge and slope masks seen here:
