#OnThisDay 1787:
A group of wealthy merchants funded a private army to crush a series of #protests known as #ShaysRebellion. The protesters- farmers, workers, & rural veterans- were responding to political corruption, cronyism, & economic policies that hurt the poor and middles classes.

You were taught the #AmericanRevolution was about #freedom and lower #taxes. That's partly true, but not for the élites who took over. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1787, in #ShaysRebellion, 800 veterans & farmers took up arms against crushing debt but were defeated by the MA militia.

Honestly, I vaguely remembered it from school but seeing it in a record of your ancestors genealogy lines I decided to re-learn about it. Umm, yeah I’d be pissed too! And it feels familiar. Elites taking from the every day citizens? Yeah familiar.

Part 1 - I’ve been looking into more of my genealogy on my mom’s mother’s side & it goes back really far. They coming over in 1636 from England. I found the #RevolutionaryWar record of my 5 times Great Grandfather John #Sumner from Stoughton, Mass.He was also in #ShaysRebellion. Just interesting.

Protests by farmers, laborers, & veterans in Massachusetts began in response to an aggressive tax and debt collection system and political corruption, rampant cronyism, and civil rights abuses. It is known as #ShaysRebellion, after its leader, Daniel Shays a Revolutionary War vet.

Marines take tremendous pride in their ability to manage logistics, ie Food, Water, Equipment. That said, fear of Military not receiving pay is a legit fear many have. #ShaysRebellion #AfghanWithdrawl
