Last weekend we had back-to-back work days for #SkyhorseCarousel to take down, prep, and prime all the scenery panels to get them ready to repaint. I was never a fan of their former color scheme, so we'll give them a new look with new scenes/animals adding Sky Stories to the astronomy theme. #SciArt

We have been getting ready to restart work on the #SkyhorseCarousel over the next month and I am excited ⭐️🎠 We’re gonna repaint the scenery panels to include lots of new myths and animals! But this science isn’t gonna science itself so I need to stop being distracted today 🙃

We went to a smaller festival this month and thought it was such a shame the #SkyhorseCarousel is too hard to bring to small events, so we bought a coin operated horse for next time 😂 It has fabulous hair! We’ll repaint it when we get started on the carousel scenery panels next month.

Since work on the #SkyhorseCarousel is on hold for a few more months, I’ve started another #SciArt installation bc I can’t seem to help myself. It involves some 4x4's, a lot of light bulbs, a solar panel, and a variety of timers and dimmers. Updated star chart now with three constellations.

Hard to believe that one year ago today the carousel arrived at our door in a shipping container. In that year we’ve transformed it into a piece of art, made incredible friendships, had adventures, and filled our world with whimsy 💜🎠 Thanks for taking the ride with us! #SkyhorseCarousel #SciArt

Going through a few Burning Man photos as I update the #SkyhorseCarousel website and I love these.

Ever wondered what the inside of a carousel looks like? The motor turns a large gear which is bolted to the center mast, causing it to rotate. Everything hangs off that center mast! The loops above the gear transfer electricity to the lights via rollers—they’re live, do not touch! #SkyhorseCarousel
Inside the carousel center is a motor attached to the iron frame. A small gear sticks up from the motor and attaches to a large gear via a chain. Above the gear are 3 metal loops with small metal wheels touching them, the wheels attach to wires. Regular view of the whole carousel so you can notice the horizontal top poles and the horses all attach back to the center mast.

I am also super proud of how Ebony Horse and Hun Chuen’s saddles came out, also both excruciating but worth it. I have a particular fondness for their themes from endlessly reading myths as a child and studying Mayan astronomy in college. #SkyhorseCarousel

I think Mēness and I really bonded because of how much of a pain in the ass I made his saddle design. The stencils were excruciating to make, place, and peel. But he came out stunning. They are all still covered in playa dust from Burning Man. #SkyhorseCarousel

The zebra was a big hit on the carousel, especially for some of the fashion-inclined :) Its design was based on a Nigerian folk tale about the origin of thunder and lightning, with a saddle pattern based on aso oke fabrics to reflect the idea of charge separation in clouds. #SkyhorseCarousel #SciArt

We had our post-playa re-assembly and wrap party over the weekend, what a wonderful group of humans the #SkyhorseCarousel has brought together <3 Ian and I gave out team awards and one crew member presented us with this watercolor he had commissioned! (Mike Shisler, IG: @ drawn.there)
