Does launching a free hosting service for simple websites like #smolweb still make any sense?

Now that I'm picking either pollux casa or some other gemini capsule hosting site on the gemini-web (Or Geminispace as most of the residents on the protocol calls it)
I'll be picking pollux.casa, and I'll have to host it on Filezilla (Or something else, hmm) #Geminispace #Gemini-web #smolweb

Btw I went a bit quiet bc I built a mini RSS reader in Grav (with Twigfeeds plugin testing/dev) and am busy reading excellent sources of fine quality content. Some of my feeds are mastodon rss. I love RSS.

Anyway, I don't know the right answer. I'm not saying smolweb stuff is on its own the way out of corporate and government censorship. But I think it's one of the tools at our disposal, and that matters.

It's part of why I find smolweb experiments so interesting, or why I format the microsites that I make using as little fancy stuff as possible. That fancy stuff is extremely worthwhile! But also, there's a lot to be explored at the smaller end, and a lot of advantages to not needing a lot off […]

For a minimal smolweb thing, that's pretty neat. You don't need a lot of secondary tooling, nor a complex parser with lots of quirks mode hacks. It's nowhere near as functional even as old-style HTML pre-4, but what it does have is pretty robust as a result.

Something I hadn't quite appreciated about gemtext, the text format used by the Gemini smolweb protocol, is that there's no need for a validator. Every text file is also valid gemtext (insert mild handwaving here), just maybe not the gemtext you wanted.

I read that the Unix command finger is going back into fashion in SmolWeb, but I don't really get how it work. It's a deamon working via (x)inetd and usind different customizable scripts?

(mozz.us is not, unfortunately, as accessible as it could be. I apologize for the hassle, and will work on improving gemkit as a self-hosted smolweb portal in a bit. Hopefully. In the meantime, if you are on the Gemini smolweb protocol not the AI bs with the same name!], please view the post […]

All data-center explode because of smolweb terrorist. It's a chaotic time at first.

The web get better.

People share css and html snippet. This achieves world peace as side effect.

The end.

Smolweb (aka smol tech, small tech etc) is a growing thing. Im making a personal info app with file management, toolkit, RSS feed network and quick notes. This basically replaces everything I did in Google Drive, plus provides more functions. I degoogled from Drive completely.

Anyone #selfhosting Gemini and Spartan servers? What are you using? I'd like to host both on one server, maybe Gopher too. #smolweb

In case you *weren't* aware: don't worry, the #GeminiProtocol isn't an action thriller movie or an AI or even a crypto wallet. It's like an alternative to the web, but a little simpler. You can access the above link and more by downloading a Gemini client program like Lagrange or Amfora. #smolweb

I have written a new Gem in my Grimoire! Today's Gem is about installing ergol-http, written by @adele . These are the instructions I used after I got my Ergol Gemini Server up and running.

Have you published an RSS or Atom feed?

Did you know it's possible to style it?

Yup! You can make that crusty old XML viewable in the browser.
