Broad & Co Ltd, were a London based company of ironfounders who were based at South Wharf, Paddington and whose name can still be seen on city streets, such is the durability of their products! The company was formed in 1882 although, interestingly, by this date they appear to have been associated in some form with the large Stockport based company of John Needham & Sons Ltd. Broad's main foundry was the Brent Foundry at Hanwell in MIddlesex. This undated catalogue is a slightly expanded version of a similar volume dated 1929 and includes a series of photographs of recent, important contracts. As can be seen they cast a wide variety of sewerage and sanitary ironwork including manhole and inspection covers, gully covers, gratings and frames, ventilating and lamp columns and manhole covers. I have scanned a selection of the 56 pages. Cast iron lamp columns, such as seen here, were primarily designed for the fitting of gas lanterns although many were subsequently re-fitted with 'swan neck brackets' for electric street lighting; indeed columns such as this could be purchased for use by electric installations by this date. Three patterns are shown here along with a table of dimensions. Patterns 10 and 12 have ladder arms, pattern 11 in the middle being plain. This page shows five varying designs for sewage or sewer ventilating pipes - sometimes called stench pipes - that are used to help remove noxious or explosive gases from sewers. The columns are decorated with collars - varying designs have rodding points.
