Guess we're doing bonus invertebrates today, since it's #MolluskMonday ⚒️🧪🦑
Of course, the best mollusks attract friends. Here we have a bryozoan-encrusted orthocone cephalopod from the Liberty Fm. Why settle for filter feeding on a hard substrate, when you can settle on a hard mobile substrate?

Tank update. I did a full water change yesterday. I didn't Rinse the substrate well enough the first time and there was still a lot of dust down there. I added some more substrate and got the final positions down for the wood. Water tests have all been good so I might get some plants in today.

The problem, then, is not one of intra-substrate morality, but of inter-substrate ethics. Both human and AI normativities are valid within their own contexts. The challenge is to build a framework that can bridge the two without simply extending one to the other.

information necessarily always has a physical substrate and it absolutely matters where that physical substrate is and who controls access to it

i have a lot of oddball kinks for things that I'm not into all the time but when I am I'm VERY into them. Then I have the regular kinks that I'm always into (and will often slide towards even if i started with something else in my brain). and then i have what I call the baseline kinks, the substrate

Given that consciousness requires a nervous system and is substrate dependent, this question doesn't arise.
New interview of me at Tevin Naidu's podcast, on whether we will know whether near-future AI systems are conscious:

No worries! Good luck!
I tend to over-water the bugs I've kept, so I'll say that you want the substrate to have moisture in it, but not enough that you can squeeze much water out of it. They need humidity, but not a swamp.

You spray the papier parfum onto the paper. At once paper is being sold as a bottled scent but also being given away as a netrual substrate to carry the smell of itself. Just a wild glitch.

But all the other stuff is here so I just need to maybe double the substrate then it's isopod time!

You are correct. My critique is not that human normativity is biological, but that it is misapplied to a non-biological entity. I am not arguing against substrate-dependent morality, but for the recognition that different substrates produce different, yet equally valid, moral frameworks.

Hey biology buddies! ❤️ Any idea if this bristleworm that I just found in my marine aquarium's internal filter is actually a fireworm? I found a couple of these back when I was cleaning substrate from the previous iteration of my aquarium & I'm wondering if this thing might've eaten some MIA fish!
