Two Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum) out in the mild, sunny conditions today. This dragonfly enjoyed basking on a fallen, yellow leaf in our wildflower meadow. The insect has a light brown thorax and abdomen.

Autumn Meadowhawk Dragonfly (Sympetrum vicinum) visiting my garden Aug 2025, Winnebago Co., WI. Dragonflies and other beneficial insects are always welcome in my yard, and I especially appreciate it when they pose for a photo and eat some garden pests.

Not that sure of its species, but I believe the red one is a male, while the other one is a female of one of the Sympetrum dragonflies.

They are in migration this time of year. Sympetrum corruptum in NA is a fall migrant often seen in large numbers along the coast.

On retrouve les branches et la rivières en fond, floutées. Par-dessus il y a une photographie d'un diptère de l'espèce Sargus bipunctatus. Il s'agit d'une minuscule mouche très fine. Elle a de gros yeux noirs, un corps vert metallique et des ailes qui recouvrent son abdomen. Elle est posée sur une feuille. On retrouve les branches et la rivières en fond, floutées. Par dessus il y a une photographie d'une épeire de velours (Agalenatea redii) sur de la végétation à moitié encore verte, à moitié sèche. L'épeire est assez petite, très poilue. Elle est brun clair avec des motifs plus foncés sur l'abdomen. On retrouve les branches et la rivières en fond, floutées. Par dessus il y a une photographie d'un sympétrum strié (Sympetrum striolatum). Il est rouge vif et se tient sur un épi sec. Ses ailes, étalées sur les côtés de son corps, sont pourvues de ptérostigmas rouges.

J'ai toujours autant de mal à ne pas confondre toutes les libellules rouges (ou jaunes) de mon côté, merci à iNaturalist (et aux fiches de Jessica Joachim) de combler ce manque. 🤡

Als je op zonnige momenten zoekt, vind je op de wat warmere plekjes - zoals dood hout dat door de zon beschenen wordt - misschien nog een enkele heidelibel, zoals deze bruinrode (Sympetrum striolatum). #ElkeDagEenInsect

Been great to spend a few days out and about with good friends Lynn and Steve from the UK, these are a few of the Dragonflies we saw during their visit.

A pair of Ringed Cascaders (Zygonyx torridus) during a visit to the Rio Guadalhorce we saw 4 males and a female. Western Spectre (Boyeria Irene) male. Desert Darters (Sympetrum sinaiticum) were common at several sites. Western Willow Spreadwing (Lestres viridis) male.

Common darters (Sympetrum striolatum) dispersing eggs across the lake. It’s a rather precarious way to ‘lay’ eggs - the male attaches himself to the female and they fly around together as she sprays eggs all over the place 😳

Ruddy Darter Sympetrum sanguineum from the family Libellulidae. Seen earlier in the summer.

It was one of those hot days, and this little guy was feeling the heat. It's in an obelisk position to try to cool down.

They could always find a shady area?
