Another #boardgame #teachmath problem: An exploding die refers to rolling a standard 6-sided die but on a 6 you keep the 6 and add another roll - and you can keep exploding 6's indefinitely. A number of games use this mechanic. Find the expected value of a 6-sided (or n-sided) exploding die.

A recurring weakness I see in college is an inability to work with lines with any tool other than slope-intercept form. In particular, students struggle when we work with lines as geometric objects or parameterized paths and not as graphs of functions. #teachmath

Emphasis on meaningfulness and sense-making as central to mathematical development. Memorization is fragile and recovery is difficult (as in forgot my password or lock cutter at my gym for forgotten combinations) but reasoning from basic meaning back to some fact is possible.

Me: If f(x,y)=|x|y/x continuous at (0,0)?
ChatGPT before class: No.
ChatGPT during class: Yes.

Thinking about ways to communicate to my data science class how to distinguish using a tool incorrectly from using the wrong tool. Meanwhile, the twins are fighting over how best to use the Magic 8-Ball to locate the remote control. #datascience #teachmath

Why does math coverage in the media lag behind literacy coverage? With math outcomes under scrutiny and policies shifting, it's time to amplify the conversation! @hollykorbey.bsky.social

Why math coverage ≠ literacy coverage - Kappan Online
The latest NAEP scores suggest that math instruction needs just as much coverage as reading. But covering math requires a slightly different lens.

Me: what’s the French word for 100?
Class: cent
Me: (writes on board) per cent, /100
Student in the front row shouts: wait, WHAT?!!
Class: laughter and nodding
Entire class witnessing the lightbulb moment: priceless.

I need to anonymize student data for legal reasons using a 3rd party homework system (I'm going all-in on #MyOpenMath this year). Is there a smarter way to do this than emailing some randomly assigned user names (I'm thinking Transformers) to the students and keep my own look-up table? #TeachMath

Teaching children to mindlessly follow algorithms is such a frustrating thing to try to combat as a teacher- these kids often resist attempts to make math make sense!

Cute #teachmath problem on noticing the dice in Disney's Space Mountain: All Systems Go #boardgame are not all identical.

You have three fair 6-sided dice. Two have 2 red faces and 4 blue, one has 3 red and 3 blue. Find the probabilities of rolling 0,1,2, or 3 red faces, and the expected number.

Calc 3 is a weird class. I spend a ridiculous amount of time just on visualizing and working in 3D but it's hard to sell that it's actually the hard part. If you can get comfortable with that then the rest of the course is mostly just variants of Calc I and II with extra bookkeeping. #teachmath

Our probabilistic intuition is worse than we realize. One nice thing about a large class (51 present) is I can prove this with the birthday problem. The true probability is over 97%. Usually my classes are right around the break-even point of 23. #teachmath
