We have entered the age of post 16 education where the vast majority of people stay on in education & over a third now go to University for a degree education but still the old boy network rules, is it tenable in the future, we're in for political & societal upheaval in the coming decades.

Yes, that's a key component. It's only really tenable as a mode of thinking as an outsider, as one is projecting one's views onto a perceived underdog. Not exclusive to 'Blue Labour' either. See Matt Goodwin or certain Corbynites' romanticism about who their policies are for.
