..v #QPR. He played a few games that season, finishing with 7 goals in 12 games. In '51/52 he only played 4 times as he did National Service. And in '52/53 he scored 19 in 28 games (+ 2 in the FAC) before signing for #ManchesterUnited for £29,999 in March. #BarnsleyFC #TommyTaylor

On this day in 1952, after a poor start to the season, Barnsley were bottom of Div 2 going into a Yorkshire derby at #RotherhamUnited. Despite a Tommy Taylor goal the Reds lost 3-1. It didn’t improve all season – Barnsley won just 5 games & were relegated to Div 3N. #BarnsleyFC #TommyTaylor

with 19 from 28 games, & McMorran 2nd with 7 from 27, it wasn't surprising that Barnsley were relegated with the lowest points total in club history -18. Taylor's fee was said to be due to Matt Busby not wanting to burden the 21-year-old with a £30k fee.2/2

On this day in 1953, Barnsley sold Tommy Taylor to Manchester United for a new British record fee of £29,999 & also strike partner Eddie McMorran to Doncaster Rovers for £10,000. The Reds were bottom of Division 2 & given that Taylor was top scorer.. 1/2

..to the semi-finals of the competition and their plane crashed in Munich having stopped there to refuel. Twenty passengers died in the crash, including 8 players. Another local boy, Mark Jones who was born in Wombwell was also killed.

Today is the anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster in 1958. Ex-Red Tommy Taylor was killed in the crash, aged 26. Manchester United were returning from a European Cup match having beaten Red Star Belgrade to advance 1/2
