Rob McConnell Interviews - PATRICK SIMS - Survivor of Marine Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina
From the 1950s through the late 1980s, U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina was the site of one of the worst water contamination crises in American history. Drinking water from the base’s wells was found to be laced with highly toxic chemicals—including trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), benzene, and vinyl chloride—used in industrial cleaning and fuel storage. These carcinogenic substances seeped into the groundwater and were unknowingly consumed by tens of thousands of Marines, their families, and civilian workers. The exposure has been linked to a wide range of severe health problems, such as cancers, birth defects, neurological disorders, and autoimmune diseases. For decades, the contamination went largely undisclosed, leading to public outrage and long-term efforts for justice, medical care, and compensation for the victims.

I had a horrible experience with chicken of the woods once, and the problem was the type of host tree the mushrooms were growing on. they absorb some of the biomolecules from the host trees, including toxins from the host‘s chemical defense system. apparently conifer hosts are more risky this way.

Not one word about asbestos or lead abatement because the POS in the White House doesn’t give a damn about injuring anyone. I hope he went out there and breathed deeply enough to inhale toxins which will relieve us of his presence.

Trump plan would allow oil rigs along entire California coast
A leaked Trump administration plan would open the entire California coast to oil and gas drilling, potentially including parts of the Bay Area — though obstacles remain.

Intriguingly, we also showed this pilus can bind microcystin on its surface! 😜 This binding may be achieved by a unique glycosylation pattern, allowing the bacteria to enrich these toxins, which could potentially aid in their survival.

In a world increasingly aware of the implications of our consumption choices, the significance of sustainable fashion cannot be understated. One crucial initiative leading the charge towards safer textiles is OEKO-TEX®, a globally recognized certification system that aims to eliminate harmful chemicals from textile products. As consumers become more conscious of the fabrics they choose, understanding the concept of 'textile toxins avoided with OEKO-TEX' becomes imperative.

There was no way this was done 100% above board. Demolition is a quick process, but this was expedited. Where's the environmental study? Engineering data? Check and removal of asbestos or lead? You can't just smash an 80-year old section of a building with toxins.

On night 3 of H&O’s Ghost Box IV, Mr. Oswalt selected a story from @rubycowling.bsky.social that’s pulpy in more ways than one. The Corpse Reviver #2 cocktail was a perfect partner for “Eliminate Toxins and Increase Blood Flow,” though I don’t think it’ll help the lecherous, blubberous Mr. Smeed.

We talked a little bit about things like bioaccumulation of toxins (including thaumic toxins) at the top of the food chain. It's less a thread for digging into a particular idea and more a thread for a bunch of small ideas.
