Hertta-Maria Amutenja Air Connect Namibia has announced the launch of a new nonstop flight route between Zurich and Windhoek, set to begin in June 2026. The route will operate twice weekly and will be serviced by Edelweiss, Switzerland’s leading leisure airline. “This is more than just a new flight, it’s a strategic bridge between Europe and Namibia. We are thrilled to welcome Edelweiss to Namibia. This connection elevates our country’s status as a global tourism and investment destination, and we are committed to ensuring the route’s long-term success,” said Bisey /Uirab, chief executive officer of the Namibia Airports Company and spokesperson for Air Connect Namibia. The flights will connect Zurich Airport with Hosea Kutako International Airport.  The route is expected to create new opportunities for Namibian businesses and the tourism sector. The initiative results from coordinated efforts between public and private stakeholders, including the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board, Gondwana Collection, Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Walvis Bay Corridor Group, Namibia Tourism Board, and the City of Windhoek. Air Connect Namibia said Switzerland is one of Namibia’s fastest-growing European source markets.  In 2024, about 22,000 two-way international passengers travelled between Windhoek and Swiss destinations, a 7% increase from 2023. Zurich is a major European travel hub and offers broad access to other destinations across the continent.  The new route is aimed at serving both leisure and business travellers. Edelweiss’ entry into the Namibian market is expected to drive growth in sectors such as hospitality, accommodation, transport, and logistics.  It also supports Namibia’s image as a destination known for its natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism. Air Connect Namibia was established in 2024 as a partnership between the Namibia Airports Company and other public and private entities.  Its mandate is to improve air access by supporting airlines that fly into Namibia’s international airports. The Zurich-Windhoek route forms part of a broader plan to expand Namibia’s global connections and strengthen its position as a tourism and investment hub in Southern Africa.
