The texts addressed Chinese culture, tradition, customs, or Chinese written language and explored holidays, foods, language, family traditions, and cultural heritage. In each session, parents assisted their children and interacted with them as Dr. Hao read the book aloud. The use of Chinese and English during these sessions encouraged parents' and children's translanguaging practices.

I have found translanguaging as an educational theory immensely useful in denaturalizing the language ideologies that lie at the core of mainstream schooling practices. I worry that this may get lost in efforts to create a linguistic theory that is meant to apply to everybody.

Last night, I decided to put #ChatGPT-4o to the test and see if it could help me practice my spoken #Mandarin. I spent about 25 minutes chatting about all things #coffee. I even used #translanguaging, and it caught on seamlessly, teaching me how to say the words I didn't know.

From this perspective, the relevant question is not what linguistic practices do & do not count as translanguaging. The relevant question is what forms of linguistic heterogeneity become marked as translanguaging and what forms of linguistic heterogeneity remain unmarked and why.

Thinking about Almeida Jacqueline Toribio's #NWAV52 plenary last night and the idea that translanguaging bilingual children's reading materials makes kids more engaged. My kids are in #Gaelic Medium Education #GME and I've only ever seen one book series that did this, and it's out of print! #Goals
