Vought’s daughter Porter benefited from. In a 2021 Instagram post, Vought’s then-wife shared that the couple’s daughter had started Trikafta, a drug that has shown great promise in managing pulmonary issues associated with cystic fibrosis, which affects some 40,000 Americans.

That search led directly to the life-changing drugs we have today, like Trikafta.

This triple-combination therapy uses "corrector" drugs to help the broken protein get to the cell surface, and a "potentiator" drug to prop the channel open once it's there. A targeted, molecular repair job.

she is living in a country in which her private health insurance could cut off her access to critically important care, as well lose coverage

sounds like an adequately funded government-run health system would be a fine option. maybe they could even negotiate a lower rx price.
A government-run health care system could block Americans' access to treatments like Trikafta - or, worse yet, stifle medical innovation altogether, and discourage companies from creating breakthroughs in the first place. My daughter, and other individuals like her who are fighting for their lives, deserve the best health care that American innovation can provide. Here's hoping that she never faces the prospect of a government-run health care system that could cut off her access to critically important care.

seems like the concern is with an *underfunded* single payer system (which iirc the nhs definitely was by 2015)

also, maybe, & this is a wacky idea, vertex could have not charged $260k per year for orkambi

there was an article on cf / orphan drug pricing a while ago that i will go search for
As thrilling as Trikafta sounds for my daughter, I worry about whether patients like her would have access to this drug under Democratic proposals for a single-payer health care system. For instance, Britain's single-payer system spent the past four years denying patients access to another cystic fibrosis drug, Orkambi. While American patients have accessed Orkambi since 2015, only in the past month did the National Health Service finally allow 5,000 cystic fibrosis British patients to access a drug the government had previously dubbed "unaffordable."

I feel so bad for you, your son and the whole family. CF is a terrible disease.

30 years ago, my daughter’s best friend passed due to CF. With years of research, Trikafta can make a huge difference. She never had that chance.

And now, Vought wants to throw it all away. Soulless, heartless.

Treatment with Trikafta: Vought's former wife, Mary Vought, noted in a 2021 Instagram post that their daughter, Porter, had begun treatment with Trikafta. This "miracle drug" was made possible by research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
