For #FindsFriday a Roman helmet visor from Trimontium (Newstead) a beautiful photographic illustration from the stunning 2-volume report of the excavations, A Roman Frontier Post by James Curle 1911. The pit content records are the stuff of dreams. From Pit LVII “at 15 feet a bronze helmet mask.”

Today's Trimontium Tuesday artefact is this colourful enamelled seal box found at the fort site. Attached to bags & satchels transporting goods & money, it was tied in place with cord. The interior contained the official mark of the sender, proving their identity.

Did you know that Trimontium is the setting for a fabulous wee story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?
"Through the Veil" was published in 1911 when the discovery of Trimontium was causing a big stir.

Today marks #WorldFoodDay - focused on food inequality & the need to cooperate to address that inequality. The Roman occupation of Trimontium must have placed a strain on the local supply of grain, game & fish.

#TrimontiumTuesday Brass saddle plates, with bosses, & incised decoration found at #Trimontium. AD80-100. As a #Roman cavalry fort, numerous artefacts relating to horses, such as harness & saddle fittings, were found; some of them show silver-plating & copper used to heighten the decorative effect.

All the women from 8 onwards used to spend several hours per day spinning. Some researches state that a good spinner could reach the amount of 100 metres of yarn per day.

At #Trimontium, diversity thrived — #Syrian archers, #Gaulish cavalry, perhaps even the 9th Legion from #Hispania served here. Local #Celtic artistry, seen in dragonesque brooches, blended with #Roman craft. A true crossroads of cultures in #RomanCaledonia 🏛️✨

#WorldAnimalDay 🐴🐗 From venationes to beloved pets, animals shaped #Roman life. Horses powered the army, wild boar roamed the land, & mice left tiny paw prints behind. Our schoolchildren’s #mosaic at #Trimontium celebrates them & inspires respect for nature & #greentourism. 🏛️✨

#HighRochester Roman Fort, Bremenium, on #DereStreet in Northumberland, linking #Eboracum & #Trimontium. Built under Agricola after the #Boudiccan revolt, it guarded the frontier. A most intriguing discovery is a round tomb.

Yesterday @pottedhistory.bsky.social and I visited Melrose to see the revamped Trimontium Museum. He spotted some of his replicas in the shop, in the displays and himself in the in-house technology film. There's nothing like watching oneself work on one's day off! It's small, but well worth visiting

Autumn is drawing in, the days are getting cooler and what better way to warm up than a long soak in a hot bath? The #Romans also enjoyed this treat. #Trimontium had a #bathhouse sited outside the fort walls probably due to the risk of fire.

For Sunday in the Borders this week, why not take a wander along #Dere Street? Dere Street ran north from York to at least as far as the #Antonine Wall, passing close to #Trimontium.

A striking #Roman cavalry helmet & mask, 1st C - Philippopolis (Plovdiv, Bulgaria). Found in a tomb, it may have belonged to a #Thracian auxiliary. Once thought purely ceremonial, helmets like this may have also seen battle. Philippopolis was known as Trimontium—like our own #Trimontium in Scotland.

🏟️ Hidden Roman amphitheatre at #Trimontium! Once holding 1,500–2,000 spectators for drills, parades & games, now just a gentle dip overlooking the River Tweed. Excavated in the 1990s.

You see that unassuming depression in the field? That's the most northern Roman amphitheatre ever discovered that is. Trimontium fort, Scottish Borders. Leaderfoot Viaduct behind as featured in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
