It's honestly frightening that "U.S. Army vet" is this signifier of inherent trustworthiness, because that's so completely decoupled of what the U.S. Army did and does.

Same with cops.

D’Souza became a hero to young conservatives across the nation (and the right-wing foundations looking to fund them). While he helmed the Review, it published a “lighthearted interview with a former Klan leader”—accompanied by a staged photo of a black person hanging from a tree—and an assault on affirmative action titled, “Dis Sho Ain’t No Jive, Bro,” which was written in Ebonics. (“Now we be comin’ to Dartmut and be up over our ‘fros in studies, but we still be not graduatin’ Phi Beta Kappa.”) The “Jive” article caused Jack Kemp, a conservative icon mindful of the right’s problems with minority outreach, to resign from the Review‘s advisory board. Decades later, it’s clear that D’Souza chose the path of the foul at an early point. But he also had trouble with trustworthiness—as I discovered in an early encounter.

Oh, that's a really useful connection. I keep boggling at all of this because my understanding of atonement-forgiveness-trustworthiness comes from 12 step stuff, which for all its faults tends to be good at separating them out from each other.

A similar argument is made that the discussion about replicability crisis should not be done in public because it undermines trustworthiness. Personally I can't see this as anything other than setting up an external agenda that materially undermines the trustworthiness of science.

REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYMENT WITH ICE Bachelor’s degree (may be waived for applicants with prior military or law enforcement experience). Background Investigation: Typical process takes “45-60 days”. Includes employment, criminal and residence history as well as financial background & credit check. Neighbors, former employers, supervisors, landlords and “other relevant individuals” may be interviewed. The purpose is “to gather information that assists with evaluating your character, conduct, trustworthiness, integrity, and loyalty to the United States.” Training: Mandatory 16-week Basic Immigration Law Enforcement Training Program and 5 week Spanish language training for Enforcement & Removal Officers (ERO). NOTE: Spanish language training focuses on Listening, Speaking & Writing with an emphasis on communicating with “aliens”. Recruits can test out of Spanish language training by demonstrating “proficiency”. There are 7 written exams throughout the training program, on which you must score 70% or above. You are eligible for remediation training and another attempt if you do not meet the minimum score. If you do not meet 70% on two exams (or one exam + retake), you are considered to have failed the program and are terminated from training. Training is done at Glynco (Glynn County Naval Air Station) in Georgia. NO OTHER TRAINING PROGRAM IS ACCEPTED. Drug testing. Physical fitness testing, including an obstacle course and 1.5 mile run with time limits. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Detention & Deportation Officers (DOD) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) positions require additional training. Applicants from approved Contractor companies must undergo the same vetting process. All employed ICE agents are enrolled in a Continuous Vetting process (regular “additional or upgraded checks”) and subject to random drug testing.

I think there's a second way to look at this as well: the "some" framing is a way for the reporter to refrain from taking responsibility for the trustworthiness of the people whose opinions they're reporting, i.e. of their sources.

A survey addresses #guidelines trustworthiness evolution 2010 to 2022. Glass half empty - modest improvement, long way to go; and half full - almost 20% high trustworthiness. Thousands published yearly, astute clinicians will find quality guidelines relevant to them

So I come back to this thread from earlier today. A flood of information due to the printing press created the need for editors and journalism. TV and radio needed sorting processes. So it will be with AI fakery. New orgs we have yet to imagine/design built to provide signal about trustworthiness.

It's funny that whenever I'm talking to religious Africans about trustworthiness, that they almost always have this thing where they expect, even demand, that you trust them (WITHOUT them even having to prove themselves trustworthy) simply because they're religious, lool.

A enthymeme I hear a lot is along the lines of "that person is in charge so they're trustworthy". People associate power with trustworthiness, which isn't always the case. Enthymemes are a part of logos. #UTCommtheory

The old signal about trustworthiness used to be the brand. Paper or TV news program you have always watched and learned to trust. Cronkite in your living room. Paradigm works in a world of scarce media, but not w/self-publishing abundance. So the urgent need is how to make a new signal in the AI age

i think there's an argument to be made that for people who live in a complex system reliant on multiple systems for survival, crimes that appear to demonstrate a person's lack of trustworthiness might be handled with zero chill
