HS: hand builds kitschy figurines built like paper dolls
as in, he needs to work off of extremely precise patterns. when he’s cutting out the pieces, no one dares approach him. but he’s a chatter box when painting on underglaze!

Trying out some more adventurous glazing. I typically just focus on underglaze, because i can safely predict the final results. But glazing is like alchemy, and the final results can be a surprise.

yesterday i put wax over the flowers and then carved the outlines thinking i’d put black underglaze in the outlines but i kind of like the carved effect? just not sure how it would translate to the fired result 🤔

ANYWAY we shake it off and we persevere because we are potters and we are used to it!! might as well keep going with the tests even if the bowl might not be what we wanted.

Hey, question to my fellow ceramic artists who paint with underglaze: do you paint on greenware or bisque? If you paint on bisque do you fire 3 times (kiln > underglaze > kiln > glaze > kiln) or 2 times (kiln > underglaze > glaze > kiln) or???

I’m testing the bisque painted + twice fired bisque this week
Imho crisp lines would need a 2nd bisque firing to avoid dragging while dipping in glaze, the only application technique that wouldn’t drag pigment is spraying.
