Text copied of original post from another social media site, link to study at the bottom A graduate student examined which nectar plants are best for monarchs Hi everyone - I just finished going through a thesis of a Masters student at Univ. of Ottawa that was recently uploaded by the university, and I'll provide a quick note about it here. As I mentioned at the outset, the student had performed some experiments to see which plant species provides the most value to ADULT monarchs. The student had placed adult monarchs in cages, both inside and outdoors, along with different species of nectar plants. The student then weighed the monarchs after a week, plus examined how much fat was inside the monarchs (back in the lab). This is an oversimplification for brevity. The results of this are in the graphs below. Of the six plant species examined, two stood out as providing the most bang for the buck, in terms of the mass of the monarch, plus, the amount of fat in the monarch - solidago (goldenrod) and echinacea. Interestingly, butterfly bush was one of the worst. Another interesting point - the plant that monarchs most visit in that region, according to naturalist sightings, is Symphyotrichum ericoides, or White heath aster, yet that plant did not provide the best nutrition. This shows how we really should not be relying solely on "which plants we see monarchs on" to determine which ones are important. There was much more to the thesis. Painted in 1964, “La Lavandera” exemplifies American artist Anne Kutka McCosh’s transition from representational realism toward a simplified, modernist design language shaped by her years in Oregon and her study of Mexican genre scenes. The title, in Spanish, honors the dignity of women’s manual labor, echoing post WWII concerns with domestic visibility for women. A woman with deep brown skin and warm undertones balances a bundled load of laundry wrapped in white cloth on the crown of her head. Her right arm lifts, fingers grazing the bundle’s edge to steady it; her left arm bends upward, hand gathering a blue headscarf at her collar. She wears a softly lit yellow-green blouse and a dark blue skirt/apron that catches chalky highlights. Her partially-shadowed face tilts slightly to our left with a faint, working-day smile. The background is a swirl of indigo, teal, moss green, and smoky brown that reads as open air rather than an interior. Broad, velvety strokes model volume while keeping forms simplified; the bright white bundle sets the composition’s apex, radiating light down across scarf, shoulder, and skirt. McCosh, born in Cleveland in 1902 and trained at the Cleveland School of Art, taught and exhibited widely after moving to Eugene, Oregon in 1939 with her husband, artist David McCosh. Her work often portrayed everyday Northwestern life such as gardens, interiors, and working women with a compositional balance learned from regional modernism and WPA-era social realism. By the mid-1960s she had established herself as a leading Pacific Northwest painter and mentor at the University of Oregon. “La Lavandera” reflects her empathy for women’s endurance and the beauty of ordinary gesture: “I am moved by the simple arrangement of life,” she once noted, “the way work itself becomes art.”

Born in Madrid, Spain in 1900, de Diego immigrated to the United States in 1924 and settled in Chicago, where by the mid-1930s he was exhibiting at the Art Institute of Chicago. The period saw him refine a personal idiom mixing architecture, theater, and dreams as we see here in the way ruins, figure, and horizon interlock. In context of the moment of global uncertainty during the 1930s, "The Fascination of Space" captures an artist (and age) testing the edges of what comes next.

I grew up watching George Carlin specials, Sesame Street, the Electric Company AND Yellow Submarine on PBS. We would watch free children’s theater at the UofO. All of that made me into a curious, intelligent, fair, funny, kind and ethical person. I wonder what kind of world these folks grew up in.

I'm a UofO alum*/fan but as a science/agro fan too, OSU is great school except that Monsanto partnership and that one time they cut down the wrong tree that was like 400 years old.
