This charming Panasonic RC-X310 Stereo Alarm Clock Radio with detachable speakers. This one is from around 1982 based on what I can deduce using sales catalogs from the era.
Has pretty good sound for having paper cone speakers. Gotta love the VFD.

The whole series was except for VFD, which was Sega internal instead cause the series as a whole was produced by the late Rieko Kodama of Phantasy Star/Skies of Arcadia fame. Even after the developer of the first three games shut its doors, there were still people at Sega who ensured it concluded.

Yeah, it's really unlikely we'll ever get another one since none of the key people are at Sega anymore, though I don't know what team at Sega did VFD and how much staff it shared with the previous ones other than Rieko Kodama producing all 4 games.

squeaking of which i'm gonna be kinda sad when they switch line 2 over to the new trains the sound of the rev up and rev down VFD noise is SO iconic
and electric? that's either a vzvzuuuzuzuuzvv train if it's got older VFDs that operate at audio frequencies or it's an eeeeeeeeeeeeeee train otherwise.

A new Frogger added to the collection for #RandomGameSaturday
Frogger, 1983, Gakken VFD.
Though it looks like the Coleco Mini-Arcade from the same year, it is tougher! It added a snake in the 2nd level on, for more frog peril. I prefer the gameplay of the Gakken.
However, the viewing angle sucks.

Anyhow, I * think * I've got a complete understanding of this circuit now, though the voltage converter will remain a black box as I can't find a datasheets for it. At least I've figured out two of the three mystery components, the VFD and the calculator chip.

Started building the spindle box for the VFD and cooling pump control. Cut the key hole for the 240 power inlet and drilled all the fan mounts.

I know it's apples to oranges, but I would love to see people in SL create more.. tactile devices, that rely only so much on menus.
Turning on a home stereo at the press of a button, being able scroll a knob with the middle mouse or clicking to the left or right of the device, using a VFD display..

Woohoo vfd is all programmed and working in Linux CNC... And it's spinning!
All that's left is to install spoilboard. Tram it. Face the board. Then cut aluminium z plate install that replacing the plywood temp. And install tool probe... Then my CNC done!*
