Your Daily Reminder:
RFK jr is a menace to public health

We should be following the great advancements made by the sciences of immunology & vaccinology over the past century...not the ravings of some quack cult leader who profited & made a political comeback suing companies making vaccines

In 2025, I am a virologist facing the complete destruction of virology, & all science, and our entire public health system, and American democracy. On January 1st, I became co-Editor-in-Chief of a vaccinology journal called Vaccine right in time for the administration to declare war on vaccination.

As one would hope for from one of the world's finest vaccinology journals, Vaccine, this piece on RFK Jr by me & my boss, Chris Beyrer, went through tough & rigorous peer review, but made it in

4/ “The risk of severe consequences of an infection in the [US] is much higher than in Denmark," said prof. of pediatric vaccinology at Denmark's U. of Copenhagen Dr. Lone Graff Stensballe.

It's a bad move, & one RFK had promised not to make.

Flu vaccines are terrible at preventing transmission -- "effective" & "protection" in vaccinology refer to preventing hospitalization-level-severe illness & death, not transmission. Getting the flu at all, even asymptomatically, can lead to organ damage, autoimmune conditions, permanent disability.

Jerne also suggested #TheBoosterEffect, by which a second exposure to an antigen promotes even higher production of the pre-existing antibodies. This observation paved the path to modern #vaccinology, where multiple boosters are often needed for a strong, sustained antibody response.

I can't think of many instances in vaccinology where self-experimentation was the basis for advancement. I know Hilleman took the plasma-derived HBV vaccine first in front of his coworkers, but that was after it was approved.
